Child benefit high income charge

Manicmondayz · 05/05/2023 09:46

Hi,

Two years ago we realised that we shouldn't be receiving Child benefit due to dh salary. I cancelled it straight away and haven't received it since

We think that we owe about 2 years worth so just under 2k, however we have never been contacted about this

Would you contact hmrc, or would you just wait to see if they contacted you? We can pay it back if they ask.

has anyone gotten away with it?

It is your DH's obligation to register for and complete Self Assessments to pay the charge. You aren't supposed to wait for them to contact you. There will probably be interest and charges on top, so the sooner it is dealt with, the better.

Jenn3112 · 05/05/2023 21:15

Yep, you will end up with a much bigger payment if you just ignore it and hope it will go away.

They catch up with your eventually, tax matters happen with a bit of a delay so two years ago they'd just be getting to now.

They can show you knew you shouldn't have it as you cancelled it. It's always better to declare than to be caught out, you will already probably get interest and perhaps penalties anyway.

It’s his responsibility to complete a self assessment and pay it. If you wait until they realise, you’ll have a huge charge on top. Get him to register ASAP and complete self assessments for the relevant years.

It's only if salary after pension is over £50k that you are not entitled.

10Minutestobedtime · 05/05/2023 23:25

If you're a SAHM you should keep claiming to accrue NI credits towards your pension.

McSquirter · 05/05/2023 23:34

I'd put it in a separate account and wait in hope.

Heinzbakedbeans · 06/05/2023 13:06

Your DH should be doing a self assessment each year. If he is only earning slightly above £50k and paying into a pension, you probably won't owe anything, or only very little. If he is earning over £60k then it is a different story.

More and more people are reaching the higher income bracket and are getting caught out with the repayment and fines. This income limit has not been changed for 10 years, if it is was in line with inflation it should be around 65k. This petition is worth signing! HICB tax charge petition

Petition: Increase High Income Child Benefit Charge threshold and base on household income

We want the Government to reform the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) by increasing the income threshold for this charge to take into account inflation since 2013, and make it apply to household income, not individual income.

Signed and shared, thank you. Unreal that the threshold is unchanged in 10 years.
