Tax returns - child benefit

cocksstrideintheevening · 03/05/2023 13:38

I had to complete a tax return for 21-22 as went over the child benefit threshold in that year. I cancelled the benefit claim which was midway through the tax year.

Do I need to submit a tax return for 22-23 or so I just flip back to not needing to as I'm not maintaining a claim?

Thanks

You have to continue until hmrc decide it is no longer required.

When exactly did you stop claiming as it's not clear (to me) from your message?

If you claimed any child benefit in the financial year 22-23 you will need to do a tax return, if you had already stopped receiving the benefit before April 2022 then no, you won't need to do one as you will not be liable to pay anything back.

This is not true - once you are in the system you need to complete one annually until HMRC agree otherwise

If you received no child benefit since 6 April 2022 then call hmrc / put a message through your gateway account to advise them that you have no reason to file - they will then hopefully agree to close your record

My apologies. This must have happened to me pretty quickly then and I've forgotten that it did. I'm almost certain that I did not have to complete a tax return for the first full financial year after is stopped the claim. I guess I was pretty busy with baby 2 so that's possibly why I've forgotten!

I have asked them to stop requesting tax returns in the hope they do…

I’ve just gone through this, if you claimed CB for any of the tax year AND went over the threshold then yes you have to complete a tax return and should expect to have some tax liability.

If not, you need to call HMRC and have the self assessment requirement removed from your records. Otherwise you’ll need to keep submitting every year even if you have not tax liability from it.
