Universal credit application for 4th child

airmaxJJeanii · 03/05/2023 03:16

I am due a my 4th baby soon (from a new partner) and have just read that Universal Credit don't pay out for a 3rd or following child . My oldest are 23 , 18 and 16 and I haven't claimed anything for them as their father took financial responsibility for them. Will I get anything for this baby or will I have to get by on my universal credit I get for being on my own ? Does anyone know anything about this please

Surely this was something you should have looked into 9 months ago?

airmaxJ · 03/05/2023 03:28

The baby isn't born yet

almostoverthehill · 03/05/2023 03:32

You said soon, so I assumed due imminently.
surely the financial implications would be something you would look at when planning to have a baby fam?

airmaxJ · 03/05/2023 03:33

This was very unexpected

Yet still plenty of time to consider the financial side

UC will only pay for 2 kids. So if you don't claim for 2 already then you w
Can claim a child element for this one and your 16 year old.

Babyroobs · 03/05/2023 08:49

If you've not claimed UC for you other children then you can claim for this one. You can have up to 2 children on the claim.

Greenfairydust · 03/05/2023 09:02

Don't you and/or the father work?

I assume you thought about your finances and how you would pay for your child before deciding to conceive?

You might be a single mother but the father should still pay for the upkeep of his child. Speak to Citizen Advice.

If you haven't claimed for any of your older children, then you can claim child benefit for your expected new baby when it arrives. I don't know about UC rules, but I imagine they're the same.

My sister did this with her youngest. The older children are on a CB claim with their father who she's divorced from so she is eligible for a CB claim for her youngest different father

Ultimately you just need to fill in the application honestly, if you're entitled to support then you'll get it.

you will be able to claim the child element for them.
if you haven’t claimed for a child before, look into the surestart maternity grant- £500 towards supplies for the baby.

Thanks for your help all

The two child limit doesn't apply to children born before April 2017, so anyone with any number of children born before that date,ie over six years roughly, will be getting UC child elements for them. This is a common misconception.
The two child rule only applies to children born after that date but children born before April 2017 will be taken into account. So a second child born after that date will be awarded an element, but a third would not. There are a couple of exemptions.
The two child rule does not apply to Child Benefit or child disability/ childcare elements. Whilst you may not get a child element under UC your Local Housing Allowance may increase so always worth declaring additional children. Also as an older child drops off your claim, a younger one can move onto it.
OP, you can definitely claim UC for your new baby and good luck with everything

airmaxJ · 03/05/2023 15:04

Oh thanks so much for the information it will just be this one baby that I will need to claim for I was so worried.

Hwory · 03/05/2023 19:33

Universal Credit don’t pay out for a third or following child that you are currently claiming for.

You won’t be claiming for your 24 year old.

If your 18 & 16 year old are living with you (and the 18 year old is in full time education (not uni) you can claim for two children. Or if it’s just your 16 y old and the new baby then your can claim for two children etc etc

Its not 3rd plus in life.
