Carers allowance for somebody in employment

Hello. I'm hoping somebody here will know the answer to this as I can't find any answers on google

Family member is in receipt of Child disability payment, high rate care, low rate mobility. They have a job.
Can someone claim carers allowance for them? They do the 35 hours etc, taking them to appointments, adminisering medication, personal hygiene and so on but I'm not sure whether the person with the disability having a job has any effect on being able to claim carers allowance for them?

Sorry I think you need to be clearer on this as it's confusing.
If the disabled person is getting child disability payment but is working surely they are no longer a child?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 14/04/2023 19:34

Depends on how much they earn.

They are 17, CDP pays until 18 years old,

The person who needs care being in employment has no impact on Carers Allowance. The carer must earn below the threshold if they are in work.

Thankyou for this. We couldn't find the information anywhere!

@Carersallowance how many hours a week does the child work? Are that still in education?

Different hours every week and no they are no longer in education

If they work more than 24hrs a week on average you need to notify child benefit.

If they aren’t in education you need to let them know the end date and the 20 wk extension kicks in.

You might not be entitled to child benefit anymore. https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-16-19.

However Yes you can claim carers allowance if you do 35hrs per week caring.

Child Benefit when your child turns 16

Child Benefit for 16 to 19 year olds - when payments stop or continue, approved education or training, extensions.

Does any of that get taken into consideration?

No problem. I can see its quite a confusing question. I guess that's why I can't find any answers online

Sorry for some reason I thought you also claimed a disabled child element on UC. You don’t!

Fine to claim carers allowance then based on what you’ve said.

The criteria for claiming carers allowance are all on the Gov.uk website.

No I stopped all of that when he left school and started work. I have been in receipt of carers allowance for him before but he didn't work then. So I wasn't sure how it would work if hes in employment. But I still get the carers element of Uc

I have looked there but can't see anything about the person needing care being in work, it only tells you about the person claiming carers allowance and how much they can earn etc

People claiming disability benefits can and do work. I guess the only thing they could look at in theory is whether, if that person is able to work then do they need that level of care with personal care etc but clearly some do. I used to work with a person who was confirmed to a wheelchair and had a carer at work with him to help with toileting etc which enabled him to work. Honestly though they rarely if ever check up what care someone is providing, they tend to just take it that if the disabled person is severely disabled enough to qualify for the disability benefit then they are disabled enough to need 35 hours of care.

I actually contacted them ( the people that deal with the child disability payment) when he started working to notify them but they said they didnt need notified and everything stays the same so I'm not worried on that side of things. Because he changed over from DLA to CDP he's actually been awarded it until he's 19 then can apply for ADP if he wishes too

Which country? In England it's on your earnings, I lost mine working 10 hours a week

This will be Scotland.

Carers’ Allowance is means tested for the carer but the disabled person themselves working has no impact.
