Online salary/tax calculators

Is there such a thing as a decent online salary/tax calculator?

I’ve tried a couple and the results have come in close to one another, but was wondering if there is one in particular that is recommended.

Obviously I’m not expecting it to be correct to the last pound, but it would be useful if we could get a close approximation. We think there’s a chance dh may have been miscoded, which will result in us needing to set aside some money to pay the tax demand when it comes in.

I've found www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk to be very good

Listen to the taxman always seems pretty accurate for me

I second TheSalaryCalculator. Always seems to be within a couple of quid for me.

CatOnTheChair · 11/04/2023 18:59

Third the salary calculator recommendation.

Thank you. That’s one of the ones I’ve used, so it’s good to know it’s fairly accurate.

Was that absolutely necessary?

It’s end of tax year. Dh’s salary has turned out to be significantly different than expected, thanks to a screw up by his previous employer. We know we are going to have to pay some tax back, but will have to wait until the end of this month for him to get his P60 and in the meantime have a big expense to pay out, so it would be helpful to know how much we actually have, after we’ve set aside roughly the amount we will need to pay back. In order to work that out we would like to use a calculator based on his end of year payslip, which shows taxable earnings and amount of tax paid.

Thank you @FannythePinkFlamingo and @CatOnTheChair it’s good to know The Salary Calculator has been useful for several people.

Money saving expert (Martin Lewis) I always fine simplest yet most accurate.

Quite necessary given that I was just answering the question you asked

Dogsandchocolaterule · 11/04/2023 19:12

Listen to the Taxman is a tax calculator online. That poster wasn't being mean, they were being helpful! 😂

Greensleevevssnotnose · 11/04/2023 19:12

That's what I use

Apologies, I haven’t heard of that one and reacted in the moment. Hate dealing with tax stuff, it always makes me stressed and grumpy.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I realised my mistake as soon as I posted and apologised. Not an excuse, I am a grumpy sod when dealing with taxes and very stressed today.

I've found the salary calculator accurate even when playing about with part time, opt in/out of pension, taxable benefits and redundancy. I've not always been happy with my pay packet but at least I've never been surprised by it either 😂

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 11/04/2023 19:21

That’s ok OP tax makes me stressed & grumpy sometimes too

SuddenlySidney · 11/04/2023 19:21

@PensionPuzzle, good to know thank you.

I hate all this. We’re just starting building work and I need to be clear on my budget, but now we have this hanging over us until dh’s P60 comes through. He’s got an accountant set up to look at it after that, but we’re fairly sure we need to pay some back and it would be good to know roughly how much.

Don't forget that most companies have work place pensions with a minimum contribution, so these salary calculators don't take this into consideration

Thank you. I have used the two calculators suggested above now and they both allow you to input your pension contributions. (I have dh’s payslips, so could use the correct figures.)

The results were just a few pounds apart, so I’m hoping that means we now have a reasonable idea of what we have and what we need to set aside and fingers crossed, it’s not looking as bad as we thought. (Neither of us are blessed with naturally mathematical brains and tax issues fry what few brain cells we share between us, hence needing the calculators!)

I may be being dense, but am I correct in thinking that if I put in his total taxable pay for the year, then enter total pension contributions, that should give me approximately the amount of tax dh should pay for the year?

There are two figures on the final payslip, ‘total gross’ and ‘total taxable pay’, the second figure being higher, which I assume takes into account taxable benefits?

I input the figures both with and without his current tax code (which we believe is wrong as it was based on a lower predicted annual salary) and I think that should have given me a maximum and minimum amount we may owe?

What’s confusing me is that dh appears to have paid more tax than either of the calculators suggest he should have done, with or without using his current tax code.

It would be lovely if we were wrong and they actually owe us for a change, but knowing our luck I doubt it.

Or - have I just got it all completely wrong and should give up now and just have to be really cautious until we get his P60 through? 😫
