Child benefit

DS1 is 18 and doing A levels. I also have DS2 who is 14.

I'm trying to find out how much and when CB will reduce by, presumably after when DS1 leaves school this summer.

Does anyone know about the reduction please, it says there is a higher amount for the eldest child?

I have tried the HMRC site but there is a chatbot who doesn't seem to know

Once your 18yr is too old, your younger child will get the higher rate instead.

Ok great that will make a difference even if small!

It says about if the eldest is staying in full time education it can continue, he is going to university but may be staying at home

I'm guessing this doesn't count

Also I suppose CB will increase by 10% in line with inflation? Could bring it up a wee bit

I think it's £8.80 it's going up by

dementedpixie · 30/03/2023 09:09

You dont get CB if they are at University
Your next child would get the higher rate instead

hedgehoglurker · 30/03/2023 09:09

You are right that Uni doesn't count.

AndTheSurveySays · 30/03/2023 09:09

Yes it's only non-advanced education such as GCSE's, NVQ 1,2,3 or A-levels etc

A degree is classed as advanced education so you won't get child benefit for him anymore

What are the Child Benefit rates for 2023/24

There are two Child Benefit weekly rates in place:

  • Eldest or only child - rising from £21.80 to £24.00 (an increase of £2.20 a week)
  • Additional children - rising from £14.45 to £15.90 (an increase of £1.45 a week)

Thanks for the help. I was a bit confused by the 'eldest or only child' part

Eldest or only child - that you are claiming Child Benefit for. Yes, it could be worded more clearly.

Orangesandlemons77 · 30/03/2023 10:14

Yes it could, I just thought it is my eldest not being claimed for anymore..

From today

Dc turned 18 last year. I got a letter in spring/summer asking me to inform them of what dc would be doing from the summer. It stopped beginning of September and then dc2 got higher rate. The letter was really clear and easy to follow. There was something about notifying them sooner if dc started working over a certain number of hours ?28 because this would stop the benefit sooner.

Thanks. If you get your benefit today, will it be a higher amount or will I need to wait until next month?
Mine has gone up but only by a few pounds for the 4 weeks. I have 3 children. Its weird. Not sure its correct. I know its not much but my increase doesn't add up to the amounts on this thread.

neveradullmoment99 · 10/04/2023 15:00

I get money for the eldest and the two other children are on the smaller amount. That added up to about £202. Mine has gone up to £207.00. Its weird.

Whatthetrolley · 10/04/2023 15:28

I think it may be paid in arrears so the small increase is the difference from 6th April when it increased until today, then, in 4 weeks the next payment should be the full increase (hopefully!)

violetskypurple · 10/04/2023 15:38

@neveradullmoment99 it increased on the 6th April and the first payments with the increase are from today so you'll only have a few days with the higher amount this month then next month it'll be a full months worth of higher payments IYSWIM

neveradullmoment99 · 10/04/2023 16:09

That's great, thank you both :)
