Has anyone over 50 taken out a mortgage recently on their own?

Hi,
I’m 51 and going through a divorce. Im
trying to see what I can - comfortably - afford without affecting our lifestyle much. I am probably going to need a mortgage of about £50k but I’d like to pay this off over ten years (with the option of overpaying if I can). Disposable income atm is £1000 a month.

Anyone in a similar boat?

I've recently been approved in theory for a similar situation, with far less disposable income.

However the first broker I went to said Not possible, so I went to another.

I know another single mum who has had to do the same, at two different stages of her SP life, she advised me to try a second broker.

Yes, I'm 54 and have recently taken out a 79k mortgage which will take me up to retirement.

I want this to be me, soon. Hoping to borrow ~ £50k on salary = £29k, over 15 years as presumed term (I am approaching 56). I need to make an appt with Nationwide.

I’m 50 and remortgaged for £173000 and I’m a single parent. You just need to find the right mortgage broker.

Greenfairydust · 22/03/2023 20:57

I am doing this at the moment.

52 and want to borrow £75K over 12 years. I will give it a try but might need to look at a longer mortgage term according to the current broker. The application has gone out today...

If not I have my eye on a couple of cheaper properties where I could borrow 60K instead which should be less of an issue.

I’m wondering if I can arrange a mortgage around the knowledge that I’ll get a lump sum from my pension at 60 (I believe I can get it then anyway) so that payments are reduced? Has anyone done this or know of it?

Talk to a good broker, I work for one and single mortgages of clients in their 50's are very common these days.

@Lostinthisspace I enquired the same re the pension for a mortgage and was told no. They would only count it if I was in actual receipt of the pension.

Ok, it’s probably a good idea that I leave the pension alone anyway.

A friend of mine is just about to take out a new mortgage (after selling his house) until the age of 77 due to his financial circumstances. His wife doesn't work. Perhaps look at extended time period mortgages and if you are eligible.
