About Credit Rating

I have an 88 score on Experian, compared to 97 two years ago. I am mortgage/rent free, and have no loans or credit cards, is this why my credit rating has gone down? Do I need to take some sort of loan out to restore my credit to an excellent standard?
I am asking as I am thinking of selling my current home, and may need a small mortgage on the next one. Thankyou in advance.

Your credit score is meaningless and each lender has a different criteria anyway. I wouldn't take out a loan but I would use my credit card and pay it off each month as you'll be moving towards having no credit history. If you don't have a credit card then you'll take a hit by applying for one.
