Those of you in your mid to late 30s.. especially parents and SAHM's. Do you have any savings? If so, how much? I'm 35 and have £100 to my name. It's depressing.

We're 39/40yrs old. Wife is SAHM, I work full time.
About 160k in various savings/investments, and c230k in my workplace pension. I save/invest around 2,800/month.

I'm 37, dh is 41. 3 dc.

We have £1500 in instant access savings right now which we're trying to build on.

We're also 4 years into a 5 year work sharesave scheme which is highly likely/predicted to return circa £50k at the end of next year. We were extremely lucky as the scheme started right when the market was totally bottomed out in 2020 so we're on track to treble our money overall...we'll have saved 16.5k of our own money over the five years (£275 p/month, absolute max we could afford) but it will be worth about £50k next year, after Capital Gains tax.

Add to that, we rent. So we're very aware that this £50k needs to go towards a house as it's probably our last chance and we'd find it difficult/impossible to save this again. It's only the luck of the covid dip that's made it a possibility for us.

I'm not in that age bracket and I don't think other people's experiences are that helpful as everyone's circumstances are different.

Do you have a pension that you pay into? Are you claiming child benefit? Do you have access to any money? Do you have a bank account in your sole name? Do you have a joint account with your partner/husband? Are you married?

Sorry for all the questions

Hello OP, you haven't come back to this and I hope it is because you are off doing something else and not because the replies discuss having more savings than you.

There are things you can start do to remedy this today, in most circumstances.

25% of British people have less than £1000 in savings. You are absolutely not unusual in this respect.

Sorry, only just seen this is a zombie thread .

Our savings were hammered by my last mat leave and I’ve just managed to get back up to 6 months expenses which is what is recommended. My savings for the next 8 months will fund next mat leave as I’m pregnant again. We’re 37.

Pension is very good though as I’ve always prioritised that.

39, mum of 1.
We have circa 15k. We do live live frugally and I am lucky to work p/t whilst DH brings in the lion's share of ££.

Myfamilys · 30/06/2024 10:13

My advice would be to just work on your own situation and try and find ways to save extra money. No point asking others you will always find someone with a pound less than you and some with more than you . Everyone's at different stages of life, careers etc.

We are 33 and 34, 2 preschool age children.

We have 2k in savings currently which does bother me. But in September we will find out childcare bill halves wheee DC1 goes to school and DC2 gets 15 free hours. I am sooo happy about this because it feels like we've been in the trenches for the last 3/4 years! Somehow we've accrued absolutely no debt in that time but we were very careful, even though we moved house we did it in 2021 when we were able to do it during the stamp duty holiday, and somehow we've done up our whole house in that time too.
We also made sure we bought a car outright just before DC1 was born. So we have had that car for nearly 5 years now (DH has a car also which is an old banger but owned outright too), so at the end of the year we may be able to get a PCP deal to upgrade our family car to something bigger.
We plan as well to increase pension contributions and build up our savings.

Sorry for the essay but I guess what I'm thinking is if your 30s are spent bringing up young children then I wouldn't worry too much about savings as long as you have a buffer like a PP has said for a washing machine repair etc!
But to me it sounds like your investments are good; you just need better cash flow!

Oops sorry I have replied based on another thread 😂

JamSandle · 06/07/2024 15:40

34, not a parent. Have 40k in savings (living with family).

JamSandle · 06/07/2024 15:41

Forgot to add pension.

Despair1 · 07/07/2024 14:53

Hi, I've worked full time all my life whilst raising my son as a single parent. Proud that I bought my own flat but have lived my life on an overdraft. Mortgage paid off now and will be receiving a good work pension. Could never afford to have savings; there was always too much to pay out on

Ozanj · 07/07/2024 14:55

When I was 38 I had 360kish including pensions.
