Save.
Financial Independence Retire Early.

Spend the minimum for a passable quality of life, have enough easy access savings that we don't blink if the washing machine breaks or the car has an expensive service.
Develop passive/alternate income streams and get out while I still have life in me!

Eating out, holidays abroad and in the UK, replacing kids clothes, days out with the kids, nights out with friends, clothes and treats for me. I don't feel bad as we always save jointly and singly too.

How is “spare” being defined?

For some, “spare” is anything after food and bills are paid. In that framework kids’ piano, swimming, unicorn-riding are all things done with spare cash. This person may say we have load spare and use it for kids learning Latin and judo.

For some, “spare” is anything left after the kids have done their unicorn-riding and dragon skating activities. This person may say we have nothing spare at all.

What is spare? (If it’s not Harry’s book)

Spare cash? What’s that?

EyesOnThePies · 04/03/2023 09:13

But generally I don’t buy stuff I don’t need, so if it’s spent it wasn’t ‘spare’, and if not spent, straight into savings.

IncessantNameChanger · 04/03/2023 09:17

Right now? Nothing if can help it. I'm trying to save / pay off debts. Sell clothes on vinted then buy what we need back on vinted. We went to school socail last night. Had takeaway. That's a rare treat. Only do treats that benefit the kids too

NatMoz · 04/03/2023 09:26

Family spare cash or personal? My personal money I spend on clothes, skincare, currently saving to go to NY with my mum later in the year. Family spare (unaccounted) cash doesn't really exist in as much as it is all planned for, but have savings accounts for christmas, leisure (all things fun; meals out, days out, dates, birthdays etc) and holiday so when we have extra money we put it on one of those "fun" pots, but they have a pre-defined go in each month too.

I plan our money 3 years in advance so we don't really have "spare" as I know what is coming in and where I want it to go!

Spare for me is money left after all bills including food, extra curricular activities etc, fuel and savings.
So once every expense for the month has gone, including savings, what’s left is then spare.

CrotchetyQuaver · 04/03/2023 10:11

I have a horse, what's "spare cash" 🤷🏼‍♀️

mydogisthebest · 04/03/2023 14:42

Books, indoor plants, plants for the garden, candles, plant pots, days out.

Zero interest in clothes, handbags, makeup
