I am just wondering I am moving into first house (rented) never rented before. I will be moving with boyfriend. I get PIP and live in Scotland, would i be eligible for council tax discount?

what qualifies for severely mental conditions? Does Autism? Thanks

To qualify for the SMI exemption you would need to be severely mentally impaired. So it would depend how your autism affects you. If you are able to live independently with your boyfriend I doubt you would qualify. A doctor needs to certify that you are severely mentally impaired.

Noras · 23/02/2023 20:14

I don’t think it does. We only get a discount as autistic son is a student and I’m a career. That just leaves DH. Maybe if partner can claim carers allowance that just leaves you as one individual and you could get 25% discount.

Carer not career

It's things like severe dementia. Not autism

toomanyhobbies · 23/02/2023 20:17

I only know for England but for a SMI (
severely mentally impaired) exemption you would need to show that you were not capable of dealing with financial issues such as doctors letters. It would depend on the level of autism.
If your household (so you and your boyfriend) are on a low income you could qualify for council tax support.

No I don't think so.

Babyroobs · 23/02/2023 20:41

You said on your other thread that he earns £1700. There is no way you would get council tax support on this wage. I also don't think you would be eligible for SMI, I think you would need to have pretty severe mental illness to qualify. Have a look at the guidance on your local council website to see if you may qualify.

My husband lives in Scotland and I'm autistic but I can't get it.

Onnabugeisha · 23/02/2023 20:44

Students in Scotland are exempt from council tax, is either one of you a full time student in higher education?

“If you're a student and live alone or share the rent with other students, you may be exempt from paying council tax.

If you're a student, but are sharing with someone who is not a student, you may be eligible for council tax reduction.

Students living in halls of residence are exempt from paying council tax.”

If your boyfriend provides 35 hours of care a week he will be eligible to be disregarded so if you were the only only left to pay council tax you would receive a 25% discount (or 50% if you are eligible for the SMI disregard). He doesn’t need to claim carer’s allowance to be eligible for this and it isn’t means tested so his wages aren’t relevant.

I had tried to check before posting here, as so little information on the SMI discount - glad I now know. Thanks :)

He will be providing that amount of care - would he get if boyfriend though? :)

I am very sorry, even though I wrote boyfriend it somehow didn’t register, no he wouldn’t be eligible as it doesn’t apply to partners/spouses.

The forum is called money matters, I am actually just seeing what eligible for. Especially as new to all this. Sometimes a google search doesn’t provide enough and some people are helpful. Especially as forums are communties with people who have real lived experience, I now know I wouldn’t be eligible.
Thank you

I have also tried to get through to local council to check but never answer. As I wanted to know definition of SMI - info online very limited on it

How are you new to it ? Are you newly diagnosed with autism ? Have you been living alone up to now prior to moving in with your boyfriend ? If so how come you haven't explored SMI before now ? Or is it because currently you get full council tax paid?

LondonQueen · 23/02/2023 21:42

For most people I don't think autism would class you as "severely mentally impaired". What makes you think you are eligible?

It would depend, if the person with autism is SNI due to the autism, then yes it would be.
