If you share bills etc, how do you do it?

How do handle joint bills, food shopping, entertainments, joint savings? Is that through 1 joint account or do you have multiple accounts to handle each of this?

Thanks

We have two joint accounts. His salary goes into one and mine the other. Anything that can be set up on direct debit comes out of Account One, then all day to day spending comes out of Account Two.

It means the balance left over on Account One builds as the DDs are lower than the salary.

It also means when we need or want to tweak our spending, we only have one day to day Account to check.

We have two accounts. Both salaries go into one account. We then have a standing order into the other to cover all bills .
We both then take an " allowance " out of what's left . DH is the higher earner but it's all one big pot .

One joint account for bills, mortgage etc, each pay our share into that.

Joint savings account which we both pay into.

Food shopping we alternate who pays week by week.

Everything else is separate.

We have one joint account that both our wages go into - and also which all the bills go out of at the start of the month. This includes money going out as standing orders into savings accounts, and a savings account to put the month's food shopping money in so we don't accidentally spend it throughout the month (then just transfer it over as and when we do food shopping).

Then basically whatever's left over after all the bills and savings, we split 50/50 and give ourselves as "pocket money" into our own individual bank accounts to spend as we wish.

We have an account each that our own earnings go into.

I have a second account we call "Joint" which we both pay a set amount into to cover all bills and most food.

I earn more than my husband so I often do a food shop out of my own account, and I pay for all holidays.

We have three joint accounts. We use one for all bills and incomings / outgoings. We then transfer a set an equal amount to each of the other accounts and we each use one as our “own” account - so spending money to use as we wish. We leave some extra in the main account for joint family stuff / days out etc. I’m a sahm / carer and dh works full time. He’s much better with his money than I am and tends to save his spending money so his spending account always has ££££ in it and mine is always a bit overdrawn 😆 we just laugh about it, we can both see all 3 accounts when we log in to our banking. It works well for us - been married 15 years.

Everything into one account. That includes bonuses, inheritances, windfalls of one sort or another. Then we transfer to savings accounts etc.
All spending out of the one account too.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 21/02/2023 11:31

All goes into one big pot and everything is paid out of it. We do have our own banks but don't really use them.

We have two joint accounts and thrn our own personal accounts. One joint account is for regular outgoings mortgage, utilities, council tax, set amount for food shops and we contribute a set amount into that one with all direct debits. Second joint account is for discretionary spending, kids clothing, family meals out, day trips, birthdays and we put in a set sum every month but check it regularly and top it up of needed. It usually needs it by 100 or so depending on what's going on.

DH and I earn similar and just put in 5050.

Thanks all!

Currently looking into how to simplify things. Currently, priority bills come out of 1 joint account. Other things like food, entertainment, repairs, emergencies are paid for jointly but sometimes by whoever has more money left. It's obviously not ideal.

It looks like we might adopt the 2-3 accounts so that all these can be budgeted for separately from the pot.

Thanks again.

Separate accounts where our salaries are paid into. Then a joint account for direct debits and another joint account for food, household expenses etc. We transfer identical amounts monthly into the joint accounts, then what is remaining is our own.

slytherinabout · 21/02/2023 12:53

We each get paid into our own accounts and transfer everything minus £100 into a joint account. Everything comes out of the joint account apart from our own hobbies (although some exceptions). Any money left over at the end of the month (hahaha atm) goes into holiday savings.
