Child tax credits and child benefit

Are these the same thing?

I have just been made redundant and I'm looking at our finances, my partner earns £32K and we have a 2 year old.

However we do have savings.

No they're not the same. Child benefit is what everyone is entitled to. If you don't already claim, register your claim as you'll still get your NI credits

Thank you

Not the same.
Child tax credits technically come under universal credit now. So you could make a joint claim for universal credit and see if you're entitled to any help.
There is an element for housing, your personal allowance (would be a joint amount) and then a child section.
They would then take any wages into account each month and maybe give you some money based on that. Worth doing a claim though as you never know

No -one can make a new claim for child tax credits. It would be Universal credit. If you have savings over 16k you cannot claim Universal credit and any savings between 6k and 16k would reduce any amount you might get.
If you have paid national Insurance contributions over the past 2-3 years then it may be more beneficial for you to claim New style ( contributions based Job seekers allowance). It is only £77 per week but if savings or your partners earnings rule you out of claiming UC, then New style JSA may be an option as it is non means tested. you would need to job search for 35 hours a week though.

If you aren't claiming child benefit, do so as a matter of priority. On your income it is free money and will give you NI credits that count towards your state pension.

You can't make a claim to child tax credit anymore. Child tax credit was means tested but didn't take your savings into account. You now claim universal credit to top up a low income. UC is fully means tested including your savings. If your savings are over £16k you won't qualify.

TallulahBetty · 15/02/2023 15:20

Ignore CTC as you wont be able to claim these, it would be UC. Are you already claiming CHB, I hope?

No they're different.
No new claims for tax credits so if you aren't already on it then it'll be universal credit.
Savings only affect it if they're over £16k(anything over this they expect you to live on first!)
Child Benefit you should have been claiming for the last 2 years anyway. Its £20 something per week paid monthly
