Maternity allowance vs SMP

I’m having a rough time at work at the moment and I’m desperate to leave due to bullying and the psychical demands. I’m only 16 weeks so I still have 14 weeks before I can begin maternity leave. I am considering asking my gp to sign me off due to stress and some health risks, but I know I will no longer be entitled to SMP as SSP isn’t high enough to qualify. I’m a single parent on tax credits so I know maternity allowance will greatly reduce this and make finances much harder. SMP will keep me afloat. I’m not sure that I can continue with this job through the qualifying period to receive SMP as its making me very unwell and depressed.
Can anyone advise me on the best route to take please? I have researched as much as I can but I’m struggling to make a decision. Any non judgemental advice would be really appreciated.

Not sure what you are asking

But ma is £156.66 x 39 weeks

Smp is 6w at 90% of pay plus then 33w of £156.66

So depending what you earn you will lose 6w worth of salary - 10%

Sorry work is stressful /being bullied

Can you speak to your manager /union

Maybe cal acas or cab for advise

If you claim UC mat allowance is taken off £1 for £1. If you get SMP then it’s treated as earnings and taken off 55p in the £1 after the work allowance so it makes a big difference.

have you have a safety assessment done. Whilst pregnant if it’s deemed your job isn’t safe they have to offer you alternative work( desk job etc) or allow you to take the time off fully paid.

if you fell the bullying is due to your pregnancy speak to HR and if they’re no help pregnant then screwed can assist

Hi
I hope you’re keeping well 🙂
I’ve been through similar experience unfortunately so I had to leave. I have submitted a fit note to UC and told them am no longer working. Then, I’ve applied for Maternity Allowance because I couldn’t get smp with my work place.
So universal Credit paid me until I got my MA, ( you should qualify for Maternity Allowance 11 weeks before your due date and you can apply 15 weeks before due date)
if successful they’ll assess how much you’ve been getting paid; therefore pay you accordingly; exp: 156.66 max in April will be 172.45 weekly
Once you start getting MA then UC will not pay if you’re getting the max pay from MA.
If you’re getting less or not qualified, UC will top it up for you or pay you 345 monthly until your baby is born then you’ll get 290 monthly child allowance plus your child benefit 22 weekly ( apply separately for it)
I hope this makes sense to you😊; pregnancy is hard as it is you don’t need extra stress from no one. Hand your notice and just follow the steps I’ve shared with you you’ll be better off especially if you’re on a part time job xx

Tax credits ignore the first £100 of MA the remainder is classed as earned income which will be less than your wages. You will be better off not worse off.

First £100 a week that is.

Do you have any annual leave? If you take that in the qualifying period, it would still be paid. Any scope to work from
home sometimes and avoid the bullies?
