Voluntary National Insurance contributions

I am a few years short from getting the full state pension and am looking at making voluntary contributions. At the moment I can pay for the two years that I have missed, I missed them both in full. The voluntary contributions for these two years are vastly different, 20/21 is more than double 21/22. Can anyone explain to me why this is please before I make any payment. Am wondering about paying for 21/22 and not 20/21. Can I do this? Thank you

How many years to go until you reach state pension age? Might you work or get NI credits, e.g. through carers allowance, to boost your years before then?

I have 14 years to go and I have. I way of knowing if I will get caters allowance in that time, and work part time and don’t quite earn enough to pay IN contributions, I’d rather not work more but it might change.

Sorry, that makes very little sense. I do not know if I will need to claim carers allowance in the future.

How much are the 2 years. I understood the amount for each year missing was around £800.

Staygoldponyboystaygold · 04/02/2023 22:32

One is about £800 and one is about half that, but Ive not made any contributions that year. I will have to phone them.

Call the 'Future Pensions' team on 0800 731 017. They are very helpful. They can see your NI record, tell you how much your projected pension will be, and how much it will be if you make up the shortfall. They will then tell you to call HMRC to make the payment that you have agreed with the Future Pensions team.

AARGH, TYPO! the number is 0800 731 0175.

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst thank you, that’s really helpful.

Sorry to but in but I need to do this as have about 5 years to pay to get full pension and need to do it soon.

Having looked at my record I couldn’t see any way of just paying. Do I need to contact Future Pensions first?

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 04/02/2023 23:46

@over50andfab yes I'm sure you do. Do it soon, you can only make up a certain number of tax years.
