DS not paying tax?

My DS is 18, nearly 19 and doing an apprenticeship with a large firm of insurers.

I've just gone over his payslips with him and so far he hasn't paid any tax. They've put him on code 1256L. Every month says £0.00 next to the tax deductions.

I'm worried he's going to get a big bill at tax year end. He earns nearly £22k - surely he should be paying tax?

On the face of it, yes, he should be paying tax.

Are there any non-taxable deductions on his payslips, such as paying into a pension or salary sacrifice?

Wtfhusband23 · 01/02/2023 16:38

Has he just started? I suppose he hasn't earned his £12K tax free amount yet?

gogohmm · 01/02/2023 16:40

When did he start? If September he won't be paying much if any this year

Lolloped · 01/02/2023 16:41

If he started in September he won’t be on track to use tax free allowance up by they end of tax year. He will likely stay paying tax in new tax year as then his allowance will be spread evenly over the whole year rather than the portion he has worked

Omg, I'm a total idiot. Yes of course that will be it. He won't have earned his £12,000 yet.

I think he'll probably meet the threshold this month so I'd better warn him his monthly take home pay is about to start reducing!

Thanks so much. I can't believe I didn't think of that.

Check his taxable pay YTD - that will give an idea of how close he is.

minou123 · 01/02/2023 16:47

Oh, has he only just started?

I assumed he'd been employed for a while.
Sorry @VintageThoughts , but keep an eye in it.

VintageThoughts · 01/02/2023 16:58

He's just short of £9k so I've told him to enjoy the next couple of months before the tax man pays him a visit.

I think I just ruined his week 😂

But there’s only 2 more months before the tax year ends so he likely won’t pay much.

LittleBearPad · 01/02/2023 18:41

Until April anyway. Sorry reread your last message OP
