How can I find out how much tax I paid this year?

I have a p/t job earning on average £1,040 a month. I am below the tax threshold. On occasion, I see that I have been taxed £40 in a month.

How can I check to see if at the end of the year, I have been taxed, and if so, how to go about checking to see if this is right?

Your payslips and end of year P60 should show you.

What is your tax code? The fact that you are taxed some months lead me to think that you might be on a Month 1 code which is not cumulative so you are getting taxed in the 5 week months perhaps? Or are you sure it is tax and not NI in those months as NI is not cumulative?

Hmrc has a Website for seeing all tax details. You have to create a government gateway account. Very simple. There you can see all years of tax and previous jobs and tax codes. And even check your NI contributions

You can register for a Personal Tax Account and it will show you all your pay details.

As another poster has said, you may be incorrectly on a non-cumulative tax code which is why you are seeing ad-hoc deductions if your pay fluctuates. Alternatively, is the £40 for National Insurance?
