What car does everyone have and how much do you pay a month?

I have a second hand Fiat 500 X and pay £165 a month. I've had quite a few problems with it and am looking to get something else this month. I'm well aware my budget isn't great £200 per month, but just wondered what cars everyone has for this budget and if they are happy with them. I have a toddler, so would need to be four doors. Thanks in advance

@AnotherEmma thanks,
Great advice. My brother had a Skoda and it was a disaster so I'm kind off them but will check out.

On these threads you always get everyone piling in about buying cars outright. The reality is lots of people do not do this. My theory is if you own outright you have to save then continue to save after buying the car to buy your next one as inevitably it will need replacing one day. So, owning a car continuously costs money.

Have you compared a bank loan APR with car finance? I took a bank loan and bought my car in ‘cash’ as the APR on the loan was lower. Might be something to consider.

Well in a way, yes, but you've always got the current car to part-exchange. I kept my last financed car 3 or 4 years after I'd paid off the finance, then part-exchanged it and paid the difference for the new car in cash, which I'd saved by not paying finance for those 3 or 4 years.

Now I don't pay finance at all I'll keep saving and do the same again in another 5 years or so, and without ever having to pay a grand or so in interest to finance companies for each car.

You could get a 0% credit card, there are some good deals around

My car is 13 years old, I bought it about 5ish years ago. It was 5k. Nissan Note

Currently 125k on the clock, I expect to get double out of that as we did with a previous version.

I obviously pay tax, insurance, MOT, servicing and replacement bits from time to time. Its very reliable.

JustFrustrated · 28/01/2023 11:20

A45, 6 years old. 3years service MOT and warranty pack. £388 a month.

Fixed rate of 8.1%, I had really poor credit due to a fuck up 5.9 years ago otherwise it would have been 0% and much less.

Sailed through her MOT.

I highly recommend Mercs, Skoda's, Volkswagen's

Lonelycrab · 28/01/2023 11:22

2013 Civic bought 5 years ago with 40k on clock. Was 8k and I paid for it outright.

DecommissionedVag · 28/01/2023 11:25

If you're after a similar size car, I'd recommend a Toyota Aygo. I've had 2 of them and never had a single issue. Always got them a hear old from a toyota dealership and they never cost me more than £200 pm on finance. I also like that although they're little they're 5 door. I'll still have an aygo now if I didn't need to have a bigger car.

I only leased a car once because you have to pay for any scratches/damage and going over on mileage. No thanks. Prefer to save and buy a car 5+ years old.

Blueberry40 · 28/01/2023 11:29

We pay just under £200 p/month for a 2018 (I think) Kia Sportage- it doesn’t have much power but is steady, loads of leg room (we’re a tall family), reliable and safe. And the dog has room to lie down in the boot so everyone is happy!

We have a Skoda Yeti. My first Skoda after 30 + years of car ownership. Best car I've ever owned.

NameChangedForThissss · 28/01/2023 11:38

Brand new electric Audi bought outright. Previously we leased Volvos but as we came into some unexpected money we bought this time as also to keep month outgoings to a minimum (hence going for an EV).

Stick to the same car brand and you don't have to pay. I always stick with Mazda and they didn't even glance at my last one when they collected it and delivered the new (thank God! 🤣).

BarbaraofSeville · 28/01/2023 11:42

You don't have to pay for minor damage. Look at the BVLRA fair wear and tear guide. I sent back a 3 YO PCP car that was quite tatty - scratches and door dings on both panels and the back bumper.

The inside was also grubby because I treat my cars like trash and rarely clean them. I also go hiking so am often muddy.

The man who did the appraisal said that all except one very deep scratch where I'd reversed the car into the corner of a wall was fair wear and tear and I got a bill for £60.

AutisticLegoLover · 28/01/2023 11:45

My exH pays £800 a month for his penis extension car. More than he pays in total for the 4 dc he pays maintenance for. He looks like he sleeps on the streets but has a flash car. Batshit.

Kennykenkencat · 28/01/2023 11:51

I run a small run around car that is mainly dh’s car and I drive a hi-top LWB sprinter van.

Cost in total for tax, insurance, RAC Etc and £100 per month paid into a savings account for any repairs, mots etc is £195.83 per month Sometimes I don’t use the repair bill money but sometimes (new gear box on Dh’s car) it can be 18 months of money all on one go.

Stressybetty · 28/01/2023 11:52

I've got a 2013 Citroen C1 bought on finance in 2019. Dark grey with tinted windows in the back 😂. I pay £94 a month. I've got another year and a half to go I think. DH keeps on about getting something bigger but I love my little car.

watchfulwishes · 28/01/2023 11:54

No car. Spend about £150/month on a mix of car rental and public transport.

I looked at 2nd hand for dds first car and then I looked at leasing.

I paid £160 per month for 2 years £0 deposit for a brand new sturdy car for Dd as I was looking at the 2nd hand cars and the mileage and type of journeys Dd does and by the time I worked out depreciation, getting a car through the MOT and repairs etc it worked out cheaper to lease

I say that as someone who would regularly buy old run around sun £1000 on eBay.

DressingForRevenge · 28/01/2023 12:05

I got a bank loan for a focus with fewer than 8000 on the clock. Repayments were 167/month and I have my asset (loan paid off) and it’s cheap as chips to run. Bizarrely worth nearly as much as I paid and I’ve had years of easy maintenance because it was near new (new tyres, battery and brake pads).

im a single mum and had small children and pets, I couldn’t face the thought of being charged for “damage”. Anyway, within a week of buying it youngest spilled his chips into the side of the door. Kids have zero respect. 😂

Maray1967 · 28/01/2023 12:11

Bought my 2016 fiesta in 2019,cost £8k. I took out an M&S loan on 2.9 per cent which was £135 a month. Paid loan early by saving up. Ford showroom offered me their finance - err, no.

Floralnomad · 28/01/2023 12:11

We have a 2011 Kia Soul and a 72 MG ZS , we bought both outright . I would highly recommend Kia as a brand and would have gone for another Soul had they still made them in the petrol version . We picked up the MG in November and I’m very happy with it so far .

Ohifyouinsist · 28/01/2023 12:15

I'm not clear whether you're talking about leasing, PCP ( I'd always lease, never PCP) or financing a loan.

Lasereyes12 · 28/01/2023 12:31

Given that in the thread title the OP specifically asks how much people pay per month for their car, it suggests she needs to take out some sort of finance. Not everyone has the means to save up for a car especially if they need something reliable. Seems a lot of people opened this thread just to gloat.

serinam · 28/01/2023 12:36

May not be the norm, but I have only owned 4 cars in 30 years. Always bought second hand, always paid for them up front.

caoraich · 28/01/2023 12:38

You've had lots of answers not answering your question. I used to be really snooty about buying cars on finance until I realised I was saving up to buy something that inevitably dropped in value and cost me time and money in MOT with inevitable repairs, tyres etc. I just couldn't be fucked with that any more and have money in my monthly budget I'm happy to allocate to car

In answer to your question, I had a VW T-Roc for just above 200 a month that I really liked. Loads of space for buggy etc. Nice to drive. V economical.

I just view cars like a phone contract and swap them out at the the end of the term. I Always get a package that includes servicing with home drop off /pick up for ease. I've got a different car now but actually I'd go back to the T roc happily.

Rafferty10 · 28/01/2023 12:41

I have a 12 year old Mercedes, bought for cash.
I have always saved and bought a second hand car for whatever budget l had at the time, usually modest.
I would not want to pay interest for a car if there was any other way.
