Spreading NHS maternity pay over 12 months

Can anyone advise, payroll are so difficult to get an answer!
band 6 nurse working 18 hours. Take home pay £1200 a month.
id like to spread my maternity pay over 12 months. I realise this is only the OMP part.
therefore do my calculations look right….
8 weeks full pay (£1200)
18 weeks 1/2 pay (600) and SMP (£160 a week)
13 weeks SMP (£160 a week)

total rough estimate of OMP = £5000
spread over 12 months = £400 a month.
plus SMP = 600 a month
total per month £1100 ????

Therefore pay for 9 months.
Then remaining 3 months just my remaining OMP which has been spread over the 12 months.

would this be right?
many help appreciated!!!

Give this a go OP. I know it doesn't spread the payments out for you but it allows you to set a custom plan. Add up the totals and you'll get a rough idea. But you'll get slightly more as you'll have less tax to pay if you're spreading your payments over 12 months. You need to divide your total by 12 months.

I've spread mine over 9 months. My take home is usually over 2k. And I've been getting 1350 per month.

So it doesn't sound like yours could be right

Should have said I'm NHS too

QueenLagertha · 26/01/2023 10:38

I estimate you will get approx £800 per month

Mum2bethree · 26/01/2023 13:31

Thanks so much…. £800 for the full 12 months?
its a mind field!! I’m awaiting payroll predictions, it’s just taking forever!
thankyou!!

Yeah. I could be wrong. But I worked it out the same way for mine and it was spot on!
Our payroll won't give predictions any more. Ridiculous

QueenLagertha · 26/01/2023 13:54

Your first payment will be more due to the stat pay. After that they'll be the same

Hi op I'm band 6 also, mines is based on full time working but my pay spread over 12 months was 1200 roughly per month, however for the first 6 weeks it was full pay as the Smp does not kick in immediately they said then reduced to 1200.

Thanks so much for your help! Just having a rough estimate is so helpful. 🙏🏻

Check whether it is actually in your interests to spread it. Eg when I had my mat leaves, the period I was on zero pay my employer paid my pension contribution and I paid nothing but when I had time of statutory only the pension contribution was taken. There may be some tax/ni quirks that mean one way is better.
