Learner driver insurance ?…

Son has turned 17 and has his provisional driving licence. I tried adding him as a named driver to my Hastings car insurance and they said I would have to take a new policy at £690. My yearly is only 220. Seems really steep.
So went on Churchill, our nephew exact same age was added to his dads churchy for a small admin fee, so filled it all out just me and son, £2600 !!! What am I doing wrong ? Is he not a named driver? I can’t get a separate car insurance for him on my car because surely you can’t have 2 different insurances on one car? As it is my insurance doesn’t run out till June so taking a new one I wouldn’t get much if any money back from it. At a loss what are we doing wrong?

You can get a separate learner driver policy, DD is insured with Collingwood and we pay £27 a month but there are other companies too. It also means that your no claims won't be impacted if he does have an accident.

Lovely thanks, I did trawl through some posts and there were mentions of Marmalade and Veygo so will definitely look into that. It sounds a far better deal as you can pay as you go.

We've used Marmalade for our DC, it worked out much cheaper. Am also using Marmalade PAYG to insure them on my car when they're back from university in the holidays.

My dd took out Marmalade insurance, it was about £220 for six months. If she needed to claim it would be her no claims bonus and not ours.

It was marginally cheaper than putting her on our insurance.

Yeah, Marmalade for us too.

We found coveredondemand good for our son when he was learning . You just cover the days he's actually driving . Recommend it .

Bellie99 · 21/01/2023 17:37

We used sterling for dd and they then used her year as a learner driver as a small discount when she passed and took out her first insurance

strumpert · 21/01/2023 17:37

I used marmalade for all mine but you need to remember that once they pass you need to tell them

Dogsarebetterthanhumans · 21/01/2023 17:57

Collingwood were good with me and paid out on a minor claim (no other cars involved) too. It was a breeze.

MyGPgood · 22/01/2023 22:48

Adrian Flux stand alone insurance in the learners name not yours runs alongside your own insurance and it protects your no claims.

I used Collingwood for DS, £28 a month. But you need to cancel it the day they pass as it is no longer valid (costs £40). They then quoted £3300 as a new driver. I laughed and said there wasn’t a chance. New insurance was very expensive, but nowhere near that!

Admiral were really cheap for us. Cost about £60 extra for the year to add a provisional driver on our Fiesta. Now my son has passed his test, it only cost an extra £120 a year for a full licence new driver. We live in a low risk area though
