UC leaving secure job for agency work

I am looking for a new job and wondering about agency work in the meantime. There is a risk that I could have gaps in employment if I move to an agency and wondering if leaving secure employment would impact my universal credit claim. I most likely won't take this risk as I have a mortgage and debts I couldn't pay if only in receipt on universal credit but considering options. I am currently a civil servant in a permanent contract.

In this climate leaving a permanent job for agency work would be a very bad decision imo. Of course it’ll affect benefits- I can’t think of a positive to be honest.

Really stressed and close to taking sick leave. I would rather be working. I know it doesn't sound wise but hoping someone with benefits knowledge can confirm how it would be handled in the event of a gap in employment. Likewise if I take a one year contract. So I can fully consider my options.

A one year contract won't affect UC claimed when the contract ends.

Giving up permanent work for temporary and claiming 2wks later when you're no longer needed? That's not going to look good and they'll possibly deem you voluntarily unemployed so you'll get nothing.

The way to deal with your situation is to go sick, long term if necessary. You'll get SSP at least even if your employer doesn't pay your wages, don't know if you could also get housing benefit etc (does that even cover mortgages?), I expect you'd be entitled to some form of help if yours is the only wage and your sickness is long term. It wouldn't be worth claiming for a 3wk sickness for example, you'd be back at work before the money came through.

If your employment is ended by the employer on medical grounds, you move onto UC and it's not deemed your fault you're unemployed. Depending on how sick you are you could look for another job whilst on sick leave. If it's the job making you ill taking that positive action could make you feel better as well as securing a new job sooner.

If yours is the second wage and you could theoretically manage without it or with only half of it, then agency work isn't a bad idea in the circumstances. You can't put a price on your health. You'd need to budget though and work out the minimum you need to live on, save the rest and if there's money for a treat now and then that's good and if there isn't never mind. If you do this, only ever spend half the savings so you've got some emergency money left. Don't live like a king when you've got work and put it all on a credit card when you're between jobs, that's the road to disaster. You can make your agency work a second wage by finding something part time but permanent to cover the basics.

I'm the only income so I need to do as much as I can to get something permanent. A lot of roles available are fixed term/short funding. Long term sick leave or any sick leave is something I want to avoid.

Why on Earth would you lea e the security of the Civil Service ? If you don't like your current position just get on CS jobs and get a lateral transfer .. honestly don't sacrifice a gold plated job for the insecurities of agency work. It's completely crazy.

Grumygrumpyandfedup · 18/01/2023 18:19

It's a local job and there aren't many other civil service options locally. The work comes home with me, staff moral is low. Sometimes the job security feels like a bind. I would only consider agency work whilst trying to find another job.

Is your Department running a voluntary exit scheme? I am out of date on this but have dealt with issues such as this previously. At that time I would ask both you and your employer why the job ended, go back and check any points before coming to a decision. Have you consulted Occupational Health or arranged support through the counselling helpline?
