I want to stop housing benefit

I need a bit of advice. I have £6500 housing benefit overpayment since 2018. They take repayments from my ongoing housing benefit which leaves me with paying my rent in full. I'm thinking about taking personal loan. Paying them off and be done with it. I want to stop the housing benefit and all this mess and headache while dealing with them. I want to be free from them. What's your thoughts, guys?

Will you be able to get a personal loan for that amount?
Do you know how the repayments will compare to your rent?
How long will they be taking the overpayments off you v how long you will be paying loan repayments with interest?
How did it even happen?! It sounds very stressful.

It was by my stupid mistake of not reporting something in the past that I didn't realise I had to. I was religiously reporting everything to tax credits people thinking that they share this information but no. So housing benefits repayments are very minimal and slow and they keep on recalculating. We got back pay from work and now I'm another 500 added to overpayment. Personal loan calculator says I would be paying something around 197 over 3 years which if I try really hard I will be able to do it. Otherwise God knows how long its going to take to pay this off.

Sorry but if your salary is low in that you're entitled to housing benefit, I don't think you'll get a loan for over £6.5k?

If I understand correctly you want to pay off the housing benefit debt with a personal loan so you can spread the payments over a longer period?

I can see if you are struggling of course it's tempting, but have you had any debt advice/help/support from any debt charities like stepchange, Christians against poverty etc?

They might be able to get your housing association to reduce the monthly re-payment to them - therefore achieving the same aim, potentially with no interest.

(Stepchange helped my DF when he got into financial difficulty and spoke to his creditors so they didn't charge him interest while he worked to pay off his debts).

My next question is:
What's the interest rate on the personal loan? Do you pay interest on the amount owed currently?

Presumably the current repayment arrangement through housing benefit doesn't charge you interest - is it really worth paying nearly a grand in interest with a loan?

Switch to universal credit, overpayments are a lot less likely, theyl carry on automatically taking repayments from UC so you aren’t paying interest for no reason. How much are you repaying each month? I wouldn’t take out a loan to pay off something that’s interest free.

Also if they're taking back more than £197 a month (I presume they are, if you're having to pay your entire rent yourself at the moment), it'll be cleared before a 3 year interest accruing loan is paid off.

I really don't understand your logic.
