Yes I know Im about to sound like a right fool please no rude comments as I’m already beating myself up massively about this…I saw a lady on Facebook selling a ps5 for free yes I know red flags straight away right but on her post she said her son recently died from cancer and he never got the chance to use the ps5 she bought for him so she’s giving it away for free as seeing it just sitting there hurts her etc I know it’s easy for scammers to make up a sob story but I believed her she seemed genuine she’s married, has kids and a lot of posts on her page are about charity things anyway I contacted her and we had a brief conversation where I explained how I’m a single mum and can’t afford much so would really appreciate this she then agreed to give it to me as long as I don’t resell it and try and make a profit I agreed. She insisted posting via fed ex as she lives about 4 hours from me…I have no idea how much fed ex prices are but I know it’s expensive and as I’m far away and the parcel will be kinda heavy she said it’ll cost £50 I did think it’s quite a lot but I believed her as she seemed so genuine…I paid the money and she said she’d post it tomorrow (today) most scammers block you straight after they get the money as they have no need to contact you again but she didn’t so seemed genuine and also she kept getting me to promise I didn’t just want it to sell it again seemed genuine as most scammers wouldn’t question stuff like this…she messaged me this morning saying she’s posting the item now but that she’d got the price wrong it’s actually £100 to post via fed ex not £50 she asked if I could send the extra £50 and then she’d send me tracking but as soon as she said £100 I knew something wasn’t right I couldn’t believe a boxed ps5 would cost £100 to post even if i live far and fed ex is expensive that’s a ridiculous amount so I figured the lady must be a scammer and tryna see how much she can get out of me I’ve now messaged saying to leave it and I just want my £50 back she said she’ll send it when she gets home I’m now waiting to see if she does or not and feeling very anxious. She seemed so genuine as said her son died from cancer, kept making sure I was genuine and didn’t just want it to sell, has charity stuff on her page, kept in contact with me so I’m a bit torn to weather she’s a scammer or not as most scammers would block you straight away but at this point just want my money back I paid via bank transfer so doubt I’ll get it back I know I’m daft and couldn’t be more angry at myself right now.

I just googled and apparently it’s a common scam www.gamingbible.co.uk/news/facebook-ps5-scam-duping-users-with-fake-story-20220422

can you contact your bank and ask them to reverse the payment?

Megan000 · 16/01/2023 11:08

I feel so stupid just looked at the link you sent and that’s exactly what the lady wrote in the description really thought this lady was genuine especially as she said I can collect if local 🥲 yes I’m gonna call my bank now thank you.

I doubt the bank can reverse the payment if it's gone through. No doubt if you did it online the usual warnings of "are you sure this ain't a scam" came up and you over-rode them so it's your responsibility and not the banks.

Sorry you've been scammed. These people are the scum of the earth and very convincing. But I'm afraid the £50 is gone and you need to chalk it up to experience. If it sounds too good to be true then it usually is. So sorry OP.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 16/01/2023 12:08

What a total scumbag, using the story of a child dying of cancer. I hope you have some luck with your bank, OP.

Interesting. Saw a similar post on a local page a week or two ago.

Contact your bank. I bought something on FB I sent the money through my online banking, and never received the item. The seller kept in contact with me, which was strange for a scam. But every day she made a different excuse why she couldn't return my money and couldn't post the item. After 2 weeks of messaging every day, I contacted the bank and they gave me my money back straight away and referred it to the fraud team.

cantba · 16/01/2023 12:25

Its still a fraud so i would def report to bank. Her account will get blocked. Also police. Reporting them is the only way to stop these people. But you have no hope of getting your money back.

That post has been around for ages now x always feel sad when I see people commenting on it to get it

Megan000 · 16/01/2023 15:06

Luckily I managed to get my money back I contacted my bank and the man I spoke to said the scammers probably taken the money I sent them out of their account so it’s unlikely I’ll get a direct refund from the scammer but he sent me a refund of the £50 from the bank I’ve definitely learnt my lesson it really is disgusting how scammers lie about when children having cancer etc so they can trick people into sending money especially as I told the lady I’m a single mum and don’t have a lot of money but at least I got it back

I realise this is an old post. But that is incorrect information regarding the money being gone. Most major banks have signed up to the scam code and owe customers refunds if they can show theyve been scammed.
