AIBU to lie about renting?

Does anyone else lie about renting? Got some snobby parents at our school so I never say we rent.

TheBeesKnee · 13/01/2023 23:13

I can't say it comes up often 😐

Dyrne · 14/01/2023 12:26

How often does it come up??

ClangingBell · 14/01/2023 12:28

I think there’s only one parent at our school where I know this information and that’s because they moved into a house on our street. How does the issue come up?

Everydaywheniwakeup · 14/01/2023 12:28

I never lie about renting. And my rent is about a zillion pounds more/month more than their mortgages anyway. I'm not ashamed of renting, why would I be? It suits me and it is a roof over my child's head, there's no shame in that. And they clearly aren't your mates, so why does it matter?

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/01/2023 12:28

I’m pretty sure there’ll be some snobby renters out there too 😁

Not everyone who owns a house is a dick.

AlmondBake · 14/01/2023 12:32

Nobody has ever asked me if I own or rent my house. But if it's something you discuss with school parents there's no reason to be embarrassed. If they're snobby who cares what they think? 🤷‍♀️

daemonologie · 14/01/2023 12:33

They're strange people for asking!

Livpool · 14/01/2023 12:34

I am friendly with a few sets of parents at DS' son and it has never come up! I have no idea if anyone rents or has a mortgage - I don't care wither and I am a nosey bugger!

Biscuits1011 · 14/01/2023 12:42

no.. I couldn’t care less what people think!!

Cuddlywuddlies · 14/01/2023 12:47

No I wouldn’t. A mum at school once told me they had bought a certain house and I knew they were lying as it was my SIL’s house…she had moved for work but decided to rent her house. It made it really awkward when said SIL came home for Christmas and stayed at ours. She came to collect dd from school with me and guess who was there…said mum. 😬

SparkyBlue · 14/01/2023 12:48

Several of the families in my DCs class rent and they pay at least three times more than my mortgage on rent so why would I look down my nose at them that would be weird. One family are saving for a deposit and the amount they need to buy a very average mid terrace three bed is eye watering (landlord has said he is selling next year and will give them first refusal).

Nottodaty · 14/01/2023 12:51

16 years of primary school pick ups - no one has ever asked me. And i did rent - it never crossed my mind I’d be judged? I would never have asked either - none of my business!

CarPoor · 14/01/2023 12:52

No I don't lie. It has occasionally come up I suppose but lots of people rent.

No one cares if you rent or buy. Anyone with half a brain will know there's a wide range of incomes and lifestyles found at the school gates. I doubt they will even remember. I only know if someone owns their house verses rented if I've been around in their lives when they bought for the first time

ittakes2 · 14/01/2023 13:00

No - daughter at private school and I don't lie about it. We rent because of location.

Hoppinggreen · 14/01/2023 13:07

At my DCs State Primary a new Mum told me completely unasked that she had just bought a certain house. I was a bit surprised since it belonged to a friend of mine who’s circumstances I knew well (including the fact that they were renting out their property).
I didn’t care either way and I just felt sorry for her that she felt she needed to lie about it. I didn’t say anything beyond welcome and to let me know if she needed any info on anything.
I suppose it did make me a bit wary of her as I’m not keen on liars

LondonQueen · 14/01/2023 13:38

Can't say anyone has ever asked if I owned my house. Personally I do but wouldn't be embarrassed about renting either.

shivawn · 14/01/2023 13:48

Surprised so many say they've never been asked if they rent, I've often been asked. I don't rent but wouldn't be ashamed of it if I did.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 14/01/2023 13:56

People are sometimes surprised to hear I own my flat. DH family members who are snobs and assumed I rent as they looked down their nose at me.

I have zero cares what they thought. Their ears pricked up when they found out I own it. I could see the cogs whirring as they tried to place a monetary value on me.

They can f*ck off the lot of them.

fluffi · 15/01/2023 13:07

I can see how home ownership might come up indirectly in conversation if someone mentions they are remortgaging or interest rate changes.

If I was renting I’d probably not mention if I was worried about my rent increasing and just stay quiet when mortgage / interest rates come up, not because there is anything wrong with renting but because some people do judge and I don’t need the hassle.

I wouldn’t lie about renting if asked a direct question and it was relevant to the conversation or say I owned a house if I didn’t though

Angelofthenortheast · 15/01/2023 13:19

Yeah I have lied if I've been chatting to clients. I'm a self employed consultant and have found that clients act start bartering down my fee more if they find out I can't afford a house.

I do get that richer people feel more reassured by similar wealth people, so I don't think lying is hurting anyone
