Can 16 year old have own car insurance?

DD is 17 at end of march and is buying her first car
We pick it up tomorrow so need to insure it

Ideally wanted to put it in her name to start earning NCB (dh & I will go on too as named drivers)
Does anyone do this?

Other option is to insure in DH's name for 11 weeks, then move it under dd's name. I have a car which is already insured in my name and DH & I use

Any advice welcome

No, you'll have to wait till she's 17 before you can put her on the insurance.

Can you have your own insurance and earn NCB before you have a full licence? With DD we had the car insured in DH's name with her as a named driver until she passed her test and then changed it into her own name with DH as the named driver.

There are a couple of specialists who will cover him - it's legal to drive at 16 if you get the the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - but the additional cost is likely to outweigh any benefit, even if they would given he (I assume) doesn't qualify under that criteria.

Thanks - looks like I need to insure in DH's name then and switch it when she turns 17

@PatriciaHolm -no PIP, she definitely can't drive until 17 (except on private land)

I think you need to hold a licence that covers you to drive the vehicle before you can insure it so I think you will need to wait until March. She can insurance it in her name on a provisional licence, its usually cheaper than when she gets a full licence as she will be seen as a lesser risk with an instructor with her. The main thing to remember is to tell the insurance company once she passes as the premium will rise then and the insurance will not be valid if she fails to inform them. My son did this and its a good way to start building up NCD.

Thank you @CheeseCakeSunflowers

Will do this

Can you not contact an insurer and ask them?

We've just been through this as DS bought his car while he was still 16.

We insured it in as an extra car on our existing insurance for our two cars. When he turned 17 he took out a learner drivers policy which was a completely separate policy to the one we had.

When he passed his test we cancelled the learner policy and removed his car from our car insurance policy ( we got a pro rata refund ) and he took out insurance on the car in his own name.
