I can't tell anyone in real life but I wanted to tell someone. ^

We paid off our mortgage today. I'm so happy. I can't believe it.

Yay! I am so impressed. Hoping to be in the same position in the next few years but a long way to go. How did you do it? What did you do without?

PiggyPlumPie · 05/01/2023 14:01

Brilliant! We did the same last week and it feels amazing, doesn't it?

Like you, we've told no-one in real life.

So, go us!

Ofbollocks · 05/01/2023 14:03

Well done. Its a nice feeling. I remember expecting something from the building society (don't know what!), but it was an everyday occurrence to them.
I painted the garage door to celebrate 😀

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 05/01/2023 14:06

We've gone without a lot.

The house needs to be completely renovated but in the 8.5 years we have lived here we've only done the bathroom. It's liveable but tatty.

We've both worked our arses off in order to earn more and my husband sold a website.

The plan now is to save up again (I've literally got £200 left in my personal account) and then tackle a room at a time.

Amazing! Congratulations. I just feel a calm. I've been a bit tense lately and it's lifted a bit. I'm only 33!!

Thank you all for being so lovely. I was worried about upsetting people - which is why I'm not telling anyone.

What?! No letter of congratulations or special little badge or maybe some champagne?! Fuckers.

Amazing, well done! And at only 33, that's such an achievement x

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 05/01/2023 14:21

Yeah!

You will get a letter from the bank to say they have removed themselves from the deeds. It's not a particularly celebratory letter, just factual!

JerkintheMerkin · 05/01/2023 14:29

Congratulations to you all. I can only dream of that day unfortunately. 18 loooooong years to go. Overpaying makes me feel marginally better though.

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 05/01/2023 14:30

Well done. Enjoy the feeling of freedom. I don't have a mortgage and it's the best feeling.

strawberry2017 · 05/01/2023 14:36

The ultimate dream! Well done you! X

MiniCooperLover · 05/01/2023 14:38

Well done OP, it's a lovely feeling isn't it, albeit it slightly underwhelming at first.

We did the same yesterday and my DH said the lady from Nationwide said 'oh and congratulations' just before she hung up and he was a bit 'oh hmm yeah thanks'. It feels weird not to be able to tell anyone. His sister is aware we're likely to do it because a lump sum that was used came from their mum's estate after she sadly passed a few years ago. We had some Champagne last night and did a little toast to his mum and I told him I thought she'd be very proud of him for using the money to do something good for his family. I had told DH if he didn't want to pay the mortgage off I'd understand but it was the first thing he said. We had about £90K left to pay. I'm 49 and DH is 46.

Blueskythinking123 · 05/01/2023 14:51

I'm 47 and a single homeowner. I paid off my mortgage last year. It was a little underwhelming, but I'm delighted not to have the monthly payments in the current financial situation. My mortgage was £425 per month, so with all the COL increases I don't feel massively better off, but thankfully no worse.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/01/2023 14:53

@FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee amazing!

Fingers crossed we'll do the same within a month!

Ours is only just over £500 so we aren't going to feel massively richer but I'm so relieved knowing that we don't have to worry about the next renewal.

Well done to you everyone else.

Wow congratulations!! That's fantastic!! Well done 👏

CirreltheSquirrel · 05/01/2023 15:09

Well done! I'm not quite there yet but still had a big grin on Tuesday when I did the maths and realised that as long as I make 9 more payments and don't end up using the money I've saved for any other purpose I'll be able to pay mine off when my fixed deal ends in September (main reason I'm not taking a chunk out of it now is that the money earns more in savings accounts, I just need to not touch it!).

So I can only imagine how good actually paying it feels if it felt that good to know when/how I'd pay mine off!

TiaraBoo · 05/01/2023 15:19

Congratulations! 🏅Here’s a gold medal!

Just imagining a life where adults get badges to see onto their (track)suits!
Eg I passed my mortgage literacy test 😃 but failed my how to choose a pension test and now can’t retire! 😢

I did think when I left the hospital years ago with a baby (well my baby not a random one) that no one cares that I don’t know what to do with this small human and I would happily have sat a theory and practical exam!

NewYearNewName2023 · 05/01/2023 15:24

Amazing! I'm very jealous as we have another 23 years to go (we bought late) but I can only imagine the sense of relief knowing that whatever happens you have your house. Congratulations OP

flirtygirl · 05/01/2023 16:39

Congrats op. So wish the banks would send out a card like some do for birthdays and Xmas.

It's a great feeling.

coodawoodashooda · 05/01/2023 18:03

You say you won't notice much difference but op that £500 will immediately become your savings. By summer you'll have heaps. I'd have a year and save, save and save. Then a bargain holiday. Then the rooms.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 05/01/2023 18:04

4.5 years left here...
Congrats op

TTCm · 05/01/2023 22:38

A huge congratulations @FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee , what a fantastic achievement. I bet you can’t wait to start decorating!

any tips or hints? I’ve done a massive spreadsheet and think we can pay ours off in 8 years. I’m 32 so hoping to pay it off by the time I’m 40. I’m due our second baby in a few months though so need to make sure I don’t overspend on mat leave! I feel like I’ve become a bit obsessed with planning to overpay! We’re hoping to clear £150k by the time our mortgage deal (1.29%) comes to an end mid-2026. We will then only have £100k outstanding. It feels like a mammoth task but I’m so determined!

good luck everyone else!

Toooldtoworry · 05/01/2023 22:40

🥂🥳 many congratulations

Deathbyfluffy · 05/01/2023 22:43

Congratulations! I was lucky enough to pay mine off in my early 30s too and it’s such a good feeling.
We had to go without a fair bit, but luckily I like older cars and I’m not too spendy so I barely noticed! 😁

In a world full of uncertainly it’s a lovely thing to have done.
Well done to you and anyone else in the same boat, and a gentle bit of encouragement to anyone striving to do the same. You can do it too!
