Bank card being used online - what happens ?

My bank card was used online a couple of weeks ago, two transactions at midnight while I was asleep. Shops I'd never buy from normally. Zero idea how they have my card number plus 3 digits on the back. I've got my money back from Barclays.
I guess I'm a tiny fish a huge pond with this sort of thing, but can Barclays contact the online businesses and ask them to investigate? Obviously the items were sent to the fraudsters address.
Fortunately it was under £100, just so unnerving!

Has happened to me once. No idea how they get hold of info . I couldn't pick out at all how they had got my card details. Not a huge amount but about £60 overall.

I was refunded and it never happened again.

Do you have card details stored on your phone? I used a parking app then, two days later my card was used online (except mine was for around £2k), my bank picked it up and stopped it but when I spoke to them they suggested that having card details stored in that way can be dangerous.

Happened to me once as well . I was making purchases in my own home town , then at a few minutes to midnight and again a few minutes past £ 250 each time was taken in U.S , never been there in my life !

Oneanddone88 · 03/01/2023 17:45

Hmm perhaps, it's a good shout, I'll check my apps now. It's happened once before where my details (different card) were used on justeat.
It's a weird one, obviously the bank have to take my word that I didn't buy the goods and it was fraud and they'll have procedures to instigate. I know it's naive, but couldn't they contact the stores and ask for info ? One of them was Matalan.

I was stung for 9k in Brazil & Australia last week! I've never used the card in a shop or a cashpoint. I only ever used the account for bank-to-bank transfers in the UK. It's not on my phone either. How the hell they got my details I'll never know. It was a huge shock. Thankfully the bank were brilliant.

Happened to me a few weeks ago.
Several transactions of £500-£1000 one week day morning. Some transactions in a different part of the uk, some in the US. It was only the third one that I triggered a text message from my bank.

I called the bank fraud line. They were brilliant. Calmed me down, reported the transactions as fraud, told me what would happen and it all worked out fine. It was still horrible seeing the fraudulent transactions on my statement, albeit right next to their refunds.

Ring your bank fraud line ASAP. Good luck.

I had this happen pre Covid and was horrified by the lack of security on online purchases made abroad. The charges were made in USA .The fraudster used completely nonsensical names and address. They did not need to enter 3 digit security code. They did not need to have seen your card or know any details about you or it. Basically, they ( or their software) could just enter random card numbers until they hit lucky.

I doubt they would bother for a small amount. Did you report to police?

JackieDaws · 03/01/2023 18:23

Do you have the ability to freeze your cards in your banking app? If so, do that until you want to use your card, unfreeze, pay, then freeze again. It's a bit of a pain but less painful than card fraud.

GrumpyPanda · 03/01/2023 18:59

All of the above but also, have your card replaced - the scamsters have obviously realized they've hit on a working number combination.

Oneanddone88 · 03/01/2023 19:12

Yea froze and now have a new card. I didn't report to police , should I have do you think?

I had this a few months ago with Monzo.
I was a bit pissed off because it was gambling sites that I never use and at 1 am and for 15 small amounts to try and get under the radar.
They refunded within hours of my flagging it, although I felt they should have realised and flagged it themselves as it was so unusual. I got a new card in a few days
As it was refunded Monzo considered the matter closed
