What are your financial goals for 2023?

I thought I’d start a light-hearted thread for those who what to share their financial goals for next year. I know money is tight right now, so people sharing their goals may give some encouragement to meet them.

I will be on maternity leave for 10 months next year, so my goals are:

  1. to save £3,000 by the end of next year from my salary before mat leave and a bit of my enhanced pay.
  2. save on Christmas / birthday gifts by being organised and buying in the sales and planning early rather than panicking last minute and spending more on presents!

Here’s to a good year next year 🙂

Halve my debt and have £10k of savings! I earn well but after divorce (finalised this year) I have so little to show for it.

Mine is to finally buy our first home, save as much as I can for Fees and Furniture etc and to increase how much I invest per month

I paid off my dmp in November 2022. The relief is amazing.

This year I am doing the 52 week challenge.

Congratulations. What a great start to New Year, being debt free. Well done.

Thank you - this is such a helpful thread. I’ve been rubbish with money in the past but YouTube is a great place and Meaningful Money has helped me loads.

I have only recently come across the concept of sinking funds - cannot believe I never thought of this. I have to pay thousands in fees every January, have been doing so for years and I have never had the foresight to save up for them throughout the year. Likewise for tax bills, although they are not predictable at all unfortunately.

So my goals are:

  • Sinking funds for fees and bills
  • Holiday and Christmas funds
  • Pay myself first - S&S ISA, increase the amount by a fiver or so each month
  • Make sure I negotiate my salary properly like a bloke would, rather than being nice and agreeable and doing stuff for free like I’ve been doing for years
  • Mindful spending, so enjoying spending money on truly nice things for me and my two DC and nice experiences for us.
  • Not overpay the mortgage as I have been doing - invest that instead
  • Will a million on PBs - the most realistic and achievable of all my goals!

All the feels for your 4th goal @WeAreBorg. It's in my list too as for too long I've accepted being underpaid and working for free in many ways. Men would never do this and I refuse to allow myself to do this in 2023. A big help has been this piece of advice from Cindy Gallop, twitter.com/cindygallop/status/1230179055246462977?t=1rMV-LEPQdjGriS0xT2xMg&s=19

I spoke to a recruitment consultant yesterday who didn't even blink at the figure I gave her and for my last job I was working at half this. As a solo mother, that's basically giving me the second salary I so desperately need 😭.

Here's to us finally getting paid our worth!

I need to get a handle on my ingoings/outgoings. I’m definitely not excessive, but I need to get some structure in place so that I have a better view of things.

My mortgage fix comes to an end in 6 months, so I need to get on to that. It’s going to increase my monthly payment, so I need to look at how I can cover that.

Biggest thing is I need to stop (or definitely cut down on) smoking. I KNOW this would make a big difference, but I’m kind of stuck and have no motivation/desire to do it. Which, looking at it logically, really pisses me off!

I want to save £6000 this year and clear the credit card (£5000).

I also hope to get a payrise in the summer, which would be a cherry on the top.
