Mix of employed and self employed - Universal Credit Help

Hi, I am a mum of a child with health problems, I am not entitled to carers allowance. I currently work 10 hours a week from home. I have been asked to up my hours which is fair enough but my employer cannot offer me any extra, and I am having to homeschool my 8 year old while he waits for a spinal operation. I have been told I still need to look for work and have been told I need to be working 12 hours, and from January 15 hours. I have been searching for part time remote work but haven’t had much luck. I am a trained hairdresser and was thinking I could work part time doing that from home, I’ve already had some interest from family and friends after I mentioned it. But I’m confused how this would work with me also being employed.

I can see there’s a minimum floor level with self employment, would this still apply if I’m also employed for 10 hours a week? My work coach said I need to earn £617.50 from January, I currently earn £450. But the minimum floor level for self employment is full time at minimum wage. My commitments are 25 hours a week but my work coach said as long as I hit £617.50 then my two weekly meetings will stop.

if I could keep my part time job and work 5-10 hours doing hair from home that would be ideal as I could do that in the evenings. But I have no idea how this would work with universal credit. Im so stressed with my sons health and now I have this massive worry on top. They have been looking at jobs in call centres for me and said my 8 year old who’s in massive pain and on morphine could go to a childminder while he waits for his operation! He doesn’t have full mobility and is grumpy and in pain most days.

if anyone could help with advice that would be brilliant. Thank you in advance.

Is your son really not eligible to claim DLA which would then mean you could be classed a as carer and have zero work commitments? Have you tried applying for DLA ?

Yes I tried and I did not get it, I’m confused as to why. Maybe because he should get better after an operation?

Sorry I can’t help with the UC, but did you appeal the DLA? Many are initially refused but are successful on appeal.

Also, unless you actively want to EHE you don’t need to. If DS can’t attend school the LA have a statutory duty to provide alternative education e.g. home tuition.
