Why do people spend on credit cards and pay off in full?

Just read a thread where someone mentioned this in passing and I wondered why you'd do all your spending on a CC that gets paid off every month?

I never use my debit card online after my card was used fraudulently and I had no money for 3 weeks while the bank investigated. So now I use a credit card for all spending, and pay it off in full each month. DH does the same.

NewBlueShoe · 25/11/2022 17:51

Echoing other answers but also a specific example:

I have a cash back American Express. I do most of my spending on there - some smaller places don't accept AMEX and I just use a debit card then but otherwise everything on the Amex. I pay off in full, have never paid a penny in interest (have had the card more than 10 years). Cash back is paid once a year and mine is due next week, I have £270 on the way, a completely 'free' bonus for things I buy anyway.

avocadotofu · 25/11/2022 17:52

I do it to get points.

AlwaysLatte · 25/11/2022 17:53

We pay for things like holidays or other large purchases on credit cards then immediately pay off the amount. Not because we want the credit but we do want the extra protection the credit card company offers.

Newpuppymummy · 25/11/2022 17:54

Cashback. I am on 1% on all my spending on credit card. I’ve also heard it builds a good credit rating

Cookerhood · 25/11/2022 17:55

I've had a credit card for 40 years & never not paid it each month, it just wouldn't occur to me not to. I have one for the same reasons as others.

woodhill · 25/11/2022 17:56

Always do this

Loyalty points and keeps money in bank longer

You get some credit

Good abroad too

whatllitbeeeee · 25/11/2022 17:57

Points, protection and it's good for your credit rating.

Additional financial protection for holidays
Additional protection against fraud for online shopping
Work expenses which will be reimbursed
Loyalty schemes

All of the above

VeggieSalsa · 25/11/2022 17:58

Protection from fraud, cash back, cashflow benefit (i.e. money stays in my account earning interest longer).

flowerycurtain · 25/11/2022 18:00

Tesco points!!

StEval · 25/11/2022 18:01

I have had a Partnership card for years and get around £500 of Jl vouchers a year.
It's convenient and also I transfer cash to a Heath Service card,as I get 3-5% cashback in several shops I use-last year £100 cash back
Total around £600 for my normal monthly spending.
Also Blue light card gets me lots of discounts
I'm not silly or tempted to buy things I can't afford and pay back in full each month.
Also for credit rating and financial protection.
Never in debt or overdrawn.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 25/11/2022 18:03

Cash back/points and it’s very good for your credit rating

TakeMe2Insanity · 25/11/2022 18:04

Financial protection.
Get points.

CheapWine · 25/11/2022 18:04

Several reasons.

DH has huge work related expenses, it helps with cash flow.
He works away a lot so gets loyalty points for the hotel chain + extra for using their own credit card
I have an M&S one and out everything on it, to get free vouchers
credit card protection for large purchases such as holidays
Improved credit score and affordability

Georgyporky · 25/11/2022 18:07

Purchase protection, primarily. Debit card is not quite as good, cash & bank transfers are no protection at all.
I've had to use that several times.

EBearhug · 25/11/2022 18:09

Protection from fraud, insurance on big purchases, credit rating. Different cards can give cashback, loyalty points, airlines etc. I also like to have at least one each of Mastercard and Visa,in case one system goes down. And in extremis, I've got a few thousand credit limit that could get me a flight home or a night in a hotel or some other way that throwing money at a problem can help.

Also, when I was younger,I had a series of cards with 0% deals to clear debts, but that was partly because I couldn't afford to clear them in one go. I made sure I wasn't paying more interest, though.

Pinkandgreentrousers · 25/11/2022 18:28

Tesco Points

FlamingGoats · 25/11/2022 18:40

Avios.

Flew BA in business class to Florida and back this year for 1k for the two of us! All because of all the Avios I’ve accumulated and 241 voucher with Amex

mamaca · 25/11/2022 18:43

Tesco points! My card is cleared by direct debit each month, I accumulate the points and then use them in club card boost which gives 3x the value. It's paid for hotel breaks, tickets for days out and two full Denby crockery sets 😊

Wisenotboring · 25/11/2022 18:50

Cashback, payment protection, easier to track spending (specially as a couple). Lots of reasons that I thought would be fairly commonly known. We use a cc for almost everything. We never need it as credit.

Comefromaway · 25/11/2022 18:52

Similar to others I mostly use my Amex card for financial protection and cash back.

just after lockdown I called them to change my address and they said to me they could see I bought theatre tickets and to let them know if I had any problems getting refunds for cancelled shows.

if a big event/show goes on sale just before payday I can buy my tickets straight away.

it’s also useful so Dh can’t see what I’m buying just before his birthday or Christmas.

Stuffin · 25/11/2022 18:53

Everything that has been said.

Financial protection is especially good given all the companies closing down.

We also collect air miles so everything we can put on the card goes on it.

I pay it off after I have purchased something so my balance is always £0.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 25/11/2022 18:55

Points, purchase protection and building up credit history.

justasking111 · 25/11/2022 18:58

upfucked · 25/11/2022 15:52

Additional financial protection for holidays
Additional protection against fraud for online shopping
Work expenses which will be reimbursed
Loyalty schemes

All this. My debit card account never has much money in it I transfer in and out as needed. I don't want anyone having my debit card details especially online
