I’m currently working part time since having DD and through tough times me and DH have a joint UC claim, things unfortunately going bad to worse I’m moving out for time being back to parents home and just wondering how this works if anyones experienced similar? Do i just update that i’m no longer living at said address with new one, not sure how it works as it is a joint mortgage - albeit i’m not the breadwinner

To change to a single claim? Not sure how it all works it’s a minefield to me

If you have equity in the house and half the house is yours then the equity can be disregarded for a while if the house is being sold. What are the plans for selling the house or him buying you out? You can claim UC but will need to declare the house and may not be eligible if equity over 16k.

And yes you need to change to single claim on home page of journal. Assessment period dates will stay the same. If your ex still needs to claim UC then would need to make a new claim I think.

There’s no plans to sell the house, simply to remain amicable and the best parents we can be i’m opting for my own health to move back with parents for the foreseeable, i’m hopeful once we work on ourselves that we could make things work in the future so i didnt want to have to go through all the loops and hoops of my name not being on the mortgage. I previously already was on UC due to personal reasons but when got the house he had to be added on so thats why it’s now a joint acc, however he will not need to claim whatsoever etc.

Ok well if you have more than 16k equity in the house you are not likely to be eligible for UC. It's a mean tested benefit and equity in property that you don't live in would be counted as capital.

Hi was looking for advice have never applied for universal credit now in a situation where I am eligible what sort of things will I need to provide ,I am currently on mat leave so not looking for a job as u have one ,what will I need to provide thanks in advance

Viviennemary · 13/02/2023 15:34

Are you getting paid on your maternity leave? I think you will just need to apply and see what they say. And apparently if you own a property you don't live in then it can be taken into account.

You make an application online. Sometimes you can verify yourself online if you have passport, ID docs etc or sometimes they call you for an appointment. You may need baby's birth certificate, if you rent you will need tenancy agreement to upload.

No they don't ask for bank statements unless you ahve savings over 6k and they need to check savings. they will know you receive smp as they will be notified through HMRC.
