Will the mortgage/renting crisis effect social housing?

Just that really.
I'm hoping to be accepting a house via social housing with housing support via universal credit. I'm hearing a lot of things (which I don't understand) about rent and mortgage rates sky rocketing and I'm wondering if this will impact those renting via the local council?

Demand will go up I'm sure, as sadly more families will be become homeless. Social rents will also probably go up, but will remain affordable to those on low incomes.

My rent always goes up by inflation +1% so there will be a fairly big jump this year if inflation stays high.

I've been in temporary accommodation for 5 years now. It all depends on the Borough.

Ahhh so the answer is likely then! I wonder if this will be reflected in UC payments?

UC housing element covers the full rent of a council or HA property unless you are hit with the bedroom tax so the increase would be covered.

There is a government consultation going on at the moment which is about capping the amount by which rents can rise next year which should hopefully protect people in social housing from seeing huge increases in their rents. I think the recommendation is for rents not to go up by more than 5% but RSLs can choose not to increase rents by as much due to cost of living.

You will be safer than those with private landlords or a mortgage; good luck - seems a great time to move into social housing.
