Energy bill £339 per month 😭

Peony94 · 14/10/2022 16:37

We have just had an email telling us our monthly cost for gas and electric will be £339 per month, that is more than I will be earning a month after I pay for nursery. We cannot afford that amount 😣

Is there anything we can do about this? Is it better to give them monthly meter readings and just pay for usage, is this even an option? We don't have a smart meter.

I'm also confused as I thought the price cap was £2500 a year but they're charging us over 4K, I must have misunderstood this.

Do you have the app for your energy provider ? If so you could submit your readings then see what bill it generates then do some workings from there .

Peony94 · 14/10/2022 17:17

Sorry everyone, just managed to get out last statement.

Estimated annual usage for electric is £893.16 and gas is £446.57 currently. Unit rate for electric is 18.599 and gas is

Goodness sake, pressed post to early 🤦🏻‍♀️

Gas is 3.621. Our usage will definitely drop when my husband goes to sea and I am back at work so I suppose this will help slightly 😣

I'll get the app and give that a try, thank you!

What is the estimate in kwh for each?

MinervaTerrathorn · 14/10/2022 17:19

£125 is not a lot to be in credit by at this stage. I got some of mine refunded, but I could only take it down to £200 and I have low usage. So a higher dd may reflect that with winter coming.

Your summer bills don't say much about your overall usage, you need the yearly figures.

dementedpixie · 14/10/2022 17:20

It's the kwh usage we need

What is the estimate in kwh for each?

It doesn't say, it just tells me the estimated cost. It tells me how much I have used in kWh for the month for each but not estimated for annual use.

We've also bought a dehumidifier to dry our clothes to stop using the tumble drier.

whilst a tumble dryer is expensive I believe a dehumidifier us not a cheap appliance to run.😫

If you leave them on a lot they can work out the same as the drier. It's worth checking how much it costs to run.

It sounds like it's a direct debit not actual use.

dementedpixie · 14/10/2022 17:22

I'm assuming your on the standard variable rate from October where price per kwh will be around 34p for electricity and 10.3p for gas

It's your usage we need for a full calculation

MinervaTerrathorn · 14/10/2022 17:23

Are you sure it's not on there in kwh? Mine has the £ amount per year on the first page but the kwh under each tariff on the second page.

dementedpixie · 14/10/2022 17:23

What supplier?
My usage is on my bills but is hidden at the side in small print

CatJumperTwat · 14/10/2022 17:25

Mine's going up from £200 to £330ish too. We can't cut back on what we use in any significant way - energy is just getting really expensive.

No advice, just wanted to sympathise and counter some of the posts suggesting you're using too much.

Those rates are very low, you will be on an old fix, when does it run out? Your bill will more than double once you start paying the new prices.

How do you heat your water for showering and how often do you shower/how many showers a day/week? If you're high up the MN usage league, a good proportion of your bill could be on showering.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/10/2022 17:29

Ah, cross posted. Your electricity use is quite high, 1.5 the price cap figure which you should be quite close to, given your household size.

Your gas is slightly under. You also need to find out when those rates expire, because if they really were your 'new rates from November' the entire country would be clamouring to join your tariff, because most people are paying 35 p for electricity and 10 p for gas.

MinervaTerrathorn · 14/10/2022 17:29

Your electric usage is 50% higher than average and electric is expensive compared with gas, that will be what is costing you. Gas is reasonable.

dementedpixie · 14/10/2022 17:34

@Peony94 is that a fixed rate and when does it start/end?

Charlize43 · 14/10/2022 17:36

Without meaning to sound dramatic, does anyone know where I could sell a kidney?

MeghansBitch · 14/10/2022 17:44

The price cap is how much they charge you per unit so think of it like filling you car with petrol they will only charge so much per litre but obviously the more you fill it with the more you pay

dementedpixie · 14/10/2022 17:45

@Peony94 are those estimated figures on recent info from your supplier?
Using those figures and taking into account the £400 everyone is getting I get your monthly payment to be around £80

If your tariff changes to the standard variable rate then your payment will be higher

crazy4cats · 14/10/2022 17:46

ChilliBandit · 14/10/2022 17:03

I mean 72w! Not kw! A tumble drier is much more than that.

what make / model do you have? All the ones I have looked up have been about 300w so I've been really on the fence about getting one

Hugasauras · 14/10/2022 17:46

www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/lower-energy-direct-debits/#calc

With those usage figures on the variable tariff, you're looking at about £2,830 a year, so £236 a month. But some companies reevaluate the DD amount six-monthly so perhaps if you aren't much in credit they want you to pay more over winter and then it'll come down when they look again in spring.

Hugasauras · 14/10/2022 17:47

Also your address is visible on that screenshot

It's a variable rate, it doesn't have an end date on it. That is the only option it gives me and when I looked on uSwitch etc it's told me to stay put. We are with EON
