Phone app for budgeting - To use with husband

Hi everyone, just wondered if anyone can recommend a budgeting app on the phone. I would like an app that I can download that I can share with my husband, as we have our own accounts but also a joint account.
Are they any good apps for this? I’d like one where it shows for example £400 a month food budget and then either it calculates or I manually update it so that way I spent £80 it then shows me I have £320 left for the month on an app homepage. Something that breaks our money in to categories? Thanks :-)!

Interested in this too.
We used to have actual envelopes of cash! So much easier to see

There are loads out there! Have a look at Goodbudget, it’s free version is good enough and can be used on multiple devices at the same time. Please don’t pay for YNAB as it is sooooo complicated and you are likely to give up on it.

Monzo will allow you to do this. I use it and like it. I havent used it with another person so youd need to check if this is possible.

BarrelOfOtters · 19/09/2022 07:48

Toshl is good and I’m pretty sure you can share it.

Just to confuse you I LOVE YNAB it has saved us hundreds and hundreds of pounds and we both use it.

I've set up budgets for the family join account and my own personal spends and it's been amazing.

Yes it takes a bit of work to get it set up (I watched some of their YouTube vids to get to know what I was doing) but then you can always adjust categories once you're up and running and seeing how it works.

When we wanted to cut back for the winter fuel bills, it was so useful to have the reports to see exactly where our money was going each month.

Teenagekicksmyass · 19/09/2022 07:52

I wanted to do exactly the same as you OP and never found an app that could do it right. I ended up making my own spreadsheet.

I have my incomings and regular fixed monthly outgoings on one sheet and then on another I have digital cash envelopes with my budget set out for groceries, eating out, personal spend etc and then random other expenses like dentist, prescriptions etc. Then I just added a few simple formulas (I just looked up how to do them) to add it all up and subtract from my balance.

I can update it on my phone using Google sheets, which is free. It’s helping me enormously. If we stick to a budget we can save each month but before we just seemed to be wasting it.

i also use YNAB and 100% recommend.

latelydaydreams · 19/09/2022 10:50

Another YNAB user. I would go so far as to say- it has revolutionised our spending.

We no longer budget quite so strictly, but that is because YNAB got us to a place where we don’t need to.

TiffyTaffy · 19/09/2022 10:57

YNAB transformed the way I manage money.

I now just have my own spreadsheet as no app does what I want.

Girlintheframe · 19/09/2022 11:01

YNAB for me too. Used it for years now and highly recommend

LaPufalina · 19/09/2022 11:47

I love YNAB, I use the legacy version but used the new one for a while, it's a game changer.

Flyingbymypants · 19/09/2022 11:52

I use goodbudget. It splits your income into envelopes. I didn't get on with YNAB - though I probably didn't give it enough time.

Mimiandme · 19/09/2022 22:29

I’ve downloaded YNAB on the free trial and so far so good. Am I right in saying that it will automatically deduct payments from categories I’ve set such as the food shop? Mortgage etc?

HyperJar is brilliant and so easy to use
it’s the digital equivalent of cash in envelopes

Potatomashed · 19/09/2022 22:40

we swapped our joint account to Monzo which allows all of this, it’s so intuitive and doesn’t need much input from us. Plus we both get a notification when the other spends (can be both good and bad!)
