We were meant to go to a wedding abroad which was already turning into a very expensive enforced break. Now the wedding is cancelled and we've booked with seemingly the only airline on earth that don't do refunds. That's 500 quid down the swanny. I'm so very cross about it! Obviously have empathy for the bride and groom but don;t want to lose all that money. Aaaagh!

Claim on your insurance?

Choconut · 16/09/2022 21:31

Can you go on the break and make the most of it anyway?

piegone · 16/09/2022 21:34

I think that's the chance you take tbh. Most airlines don't refund if you change your mind, which is essentially what has happened. Specific insurance might have you covered but i guess you didn't take any.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 16/09/2022 21:35

I don’t know any airlines that do do refunds?

NewIdeasToday · 16/09/2022 21:36

Most airlines don’t cover a cancellation for no reason. And I don’t think travel insurance would either.

is the wedding completely cancelled?

LIZS · 16/09/2022 21:36

If you cancel you can reclaim the tax element

HairyMcLarie · 16/09/2022 21:50

All airlines offer refundable or non refundable fares (except low cost airlines which are all non refundable). Non refundable are cheaper so you chose the wrong option I'm afraid.

Try your travel insurance. Otherwise the airline must refund you the taxes (often a huge portion of the airline ticket anyway)

foobio · 16/09/2022 22:10

Try selling them on to recoup part of the cost, there are Facebook groups for this.

kennycat · 16/09/2022 23:23

Travel insurance would only cover if there were extenuating circumstances such as one of our party was ill.
we apparently went for the non-refndable
iption.
bum.
I’ve listed on Facebook and I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

Is that right? I didn’t know that. Wil they do it automatically or do I need to pester them?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/09/2022 23:29

You can ask for tax back, not sure what you mean by pester them, just ask them to do it and they will. They won't do it if you don't ask though.

Orchange the tickets to. go somewhere else. Fees may apply.

Or use the tickets anyway.

Be careful about selling them on, not all tickets can be transferred.

MarmiteCoriander · 16/09/2022 23:31

No- they won't just refund the tax if you just don't turn up at the airport! You need to advise the airline you won't be fly and request the tax back, or ask for options, alternative flights, vouchers etc- but very unlikely.

When are you due to fly? Why is the wedding cancelled? Could you still go and have a holiday?

kennycat · 17/09/2022 07:45

The wedding is cancelled because the mother of the bride is Ill. The whole trip was a bad idea tbh. Too short ti make it a meaningful family break (2 days), the hotels weee super pricey and the chn would have to miss some school which we weren’t keen on. It was a relief to not have to go in a way but what a waste of money!!
