Selling jewellery

Hello,

I have a white gold necklace that I want to give to me son, but rather than store it for the next 15 years I was thinking to see the price of white gold and possibly sell it and put the money in his (very good) bank account so it can earn interest.

Problem is I have no idea where to start! When I got it valued for insurance it was £2500 but I’m guessing it won’t be worth that for sale. I’ve looked about locally and all I can see it ‘scrap gold’ which means they’ll weigh it and give me about £50 for it.

where do I take it? Or is now not a good time?

Pawn brokers, eBay, Vinted. You'll never get a lot more for it than the price of gold.

You need an accurate weight and the hallmark, then use the site linked below. It has the best prices for gold. I’ve used it twice, look at moneysavingexpert, they give good advice on this, it’s where I found the site. I wouldn’t sell anything that expensive on EBay, the risks for sellers are too high. Now is an excellent time to sell gold. If you sell via a pawnbroker, jeweller etc. they will take their (massive) cut and will be sending to this site. www.hattongardenmetals.com

Ah that’s really disappointing as it’s very light. It was bought for me by a relative in Dubai a long time ago but I have never worn it. I wanted to give it to him to help towards his future. Maybe I’ll just store it for now…I couldn’t bare to part with it for £50, it would feel wrong towards the relative who purchased it! Although they died some years ago.

Okay thank you, I’ll take a look!

Gold is likely to increase in value, it would be better to keep it rather than put the proceeds of the sale into a bank account.

True, but if you want to sell gold, now is a good time. If you look here, you’ll see the general trend is up, but prices were falling from around 2011, and going up since the pandemic. goldprice.org
