Universal credit - how much could I claim?

Wife21 · 11/09/2022 21:43

I'll keep this as short as possible

My pay 18k (part time)
DH pay 25k (full time)
2 DC (under 3 so no free hours)
Nursery fees monthly 1200
Rent 770
Mortgage 300

Would we be entitled to any help from UC?
Never claimed any benefits before.

Hard to calculate without knowing your net wages after tax, NI and pension contributions and also your local housing allowance for the number of bedrooms you are eligible to claim for. I presume that is shared ownership with rent and mortgage? Have you tried one of the online calculators?

www.turn2us.org.uk/

This is the most accurate benefits calculator. Fill this in and it will let you know what you may be entitled to. I believe it also advises how you can make claims.

I'd be very surprised if you weren't entitled to some help with childcare on those figures, but hard to say for sure if you'd qualify for more than that, as PP's have explained.

happyfishcoco · 18/09/2022 08:46

sorry, just don't understand...
18K after tax 1300,
25K after tax 1700
almost 3000 per month, would it be still entitled to get UC?

NoMichaelNo · 18/09/2022 08:49

You may be entitled to some UC because of the childcare, our take home is more and we get half our childcare fee every month.

WalkingOnSonshine · 18/09/2022 08:50

Can’t help with UC, but are you utilising the 20% tax free childcare?

do you mean 20% tax-free childcare or UC??

or 20% tax free childcare plus UC??

TwoBlueFish · 18/09/2022 09:04

You can do a manual calculation here www.uceplus.co.uk/how-much-will-my-payment-be it’s very easy. You will need to know the LHA (local housing allowance for your area), you can find that here lha-direct.voa.gov.uk

AnotherEmma · 18/09/2022 15:12

You can do the calculation using Turn2Us or entitledto.

Your entitlement depends on whether either/both of you have any savings and if so how much. It also depends on your housing type - you've mentioned both mortgage and rent, so that sounds like shared ownership. You'll get help with the rent part but it does also depend on the number of bedrooms you have? And whether the landlord is a housing association?

Assuming combined savings under £6000 and a 2 bedroom shared ownership property with a HA, your UC should be just under £1300/month.

How on earth have you come to that number???

AnotherEmma · 18/09/2022 17:23

Max UC entitlement:
standard allowance (couples) £525.72
2 x child element £489.16
childcare element £1020
housing element £770
Total £2804.88

Earnings (net):
OP £1346.45
Partner £1734.72
Total £3081.17
Minus work allowance £344: £2737.17
Deduction for earnings (55%): £1505.44

Actual UC entitlement:
£2804.88 - £1505.44 = £1299.44

But as I said, that's making some assumptions. Net earnings could be different (depending on actual salary, unlikely to be round figures, and pension contributions), they could have savings over £6k, and the housing element might be different (but based on the info we have, I think the housing element is likely to be right).

Just UC, we get more in UC compared to what we'd get via UC and 20% tax free.

I second @TwoBlueFish recommendation of the manual calculator. Far better than entitled to or turn to us. There's some excellent UC support groups on FB who will check your figures are correct and advise when is best to apply etc.

AnotherEmma · 18/09/2022 20:57

I'm sure the Facebook groups are helpful, but my advice is to contact Citizens Advice (Help to Claim): www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/claiming/helptoclaim/
