Will change of job mean the end of tax credits?

If my husband changes his job, will that mean our tax credits ends? We will have to make an new application instead to universal credit? I'm worried because I've heard it's harder to get? I know they're changing tax credits over to universal credits, by 2024. But ours remains the same for now.

No you won't have to switch to Uc just because he changes jobs.

Anono2022 · 04/09/2022 22:59

No I changed jobs a few months back and remained on tax credits

Beautiful3 · 05/09/2022 00:07

That's reassuring. My husband has been offered a job (similar salary) closer to home. He'll save massively on fuel, but was concerned about losing tax credits. Thanks both of you.

Hi just an update, in case anyone is in a similar position. Apparently people had until July 2022 to report a change jobs/circumstances and remain on tax credits. Any changes past that deadline, means an automatic move to universal. I spoke to a benefits advisor, they said tax credits is going by the end of 2024. They are currently slowly moving people over, city by city. Apparently most people who claim tax credits cannot claim universal, because it's means tested e.g mortgaged home/savings.

Mortgaged home that you live in does not affect universal credit, savings do.

Beautiful3 · 06/09/2022 14:39

@BaronessEllarawrosaurus oops, yes you're correct.

Oh god a change in jobs triggers a move now?

OneMoreTimeBaby · 25/09/2022 11:59

Does anyone know if you stay in the same job, but work extra hours, would that mean you move over to UC? I am thinking of increasing my hours but not sure if it'll be financially worthwhile.

Needanewadventure2021 · 25/09/2022 17:24

Hi where is the information about moving jobs now triggers a move to UC? This must be something new as it was never the case. It's actually making me not want to look to move anymore as my UC award is significantly less than my TCs, so I couldn't afford to move over without managed migration.

I can understand leaving your job but not moving unless you no longer qualify maybe

another benefits adviser - where is the source for having to report change by July 2022? Changes do need to be reported some there is a requirement others are recommended to avoid under and overpayment. Government website

Get benefits advice- leaving a job may mean that working tax credit ends after 4 weeks but you may keep child tax credits so not necessarily have to move.

Also there are different rules applying to “managed migration” the process of moving legacy benefit claimants into universal credit when there has been no change of circumstance that triggers a move. A claimant shouldn’t be worse off but the rules are complex. Also tax credits move capital over £16,000 won’t affect for a year (unless there is another change such as splitting from a partner Reg 51

the benefits replaced are - housing benefit, income related jobseekers allowance, income related employment and support allowance, income support, child tax credit and working tax credit.

You will not automatically be moved to universal credit- you need to claim it. It means if you get the migration notice but do nothing by the deadline those old benefits will stop and universal credit won’t be paid.

Needanewadventure2021 · 25/09/2022 20:40

Thank you both. Makes me feel abit better about it all. Hopefully I get moved over by them through managed migration

Helpyhelp · 28/04/2024 14:52

Sorry, I know that this is a zombie thread but I am wondering if it is correct that a change in job will automatically end my tax credits. I am wanting to move from part time work to full time work and currently get child tax credits. I have not received a migration letter yet and unless I fall under the migration guarantee I will not be eligible for UC. If I take a full time job (min wage) and I’m on tax credits will I just be able to claim working tax credits or will it see the end of my tax credits and I won’t be able to claim UC. Feeling very stressed atm.
