We are repeatedly receiving bills from credit card companys addressed to oiur previous house owner . This has been happening for 2 nyears now and im surprised that he hasnt chnged the address on such major finances. I am concerned as my dh opened one of the envelopes to find that he owed quite alot. He phoed the caompany to tell them that he was not at this address , they said righlty Insupose that due to data acts the annot make any changes, but they continue to send all his bills here which to me seems a complete NONSENSE. Im getting worried about potential CCJ's. We dont have any forwarding address for him and not sure how to stop this.

Melsey, by no means am I a legal beagle but we had something similar and all I could do was return the mail/statements unopened to the relevant company with 'no longer at this address' or something along those lines. Eventually the mail stopped and I suppose the companies involved make their own investigations.

Also, I'm pretty sure any CCJ's or debts are against an individuals name so that although your address is involved, it's only in connection to that person. Any credit searches are usually done against someone's name i think.

HTH.

We had this when we first moved in to our current property and despite sending the letters back they still kept coming. Eventually a solicitor and not a bailiff (thank god) called to the door and I gave details of the Estate Agent who handled the sale. That seemed to be the end of the matter.

I'm in a similar situation - past owners racked up the debts then beggared off. This was 2 years ago, and we're still getting what bills and mail for them, including Inland Revenue stuff (he was self-employed). I send it all back unopened with No Longer At This Address - Left October 2002 written on it. Recently we've been getting solicitors too.

However, Dp has just been refused a loan despite his squeaky clean credit history. At the time I assumed it was because I'm uber-skint and thought that I must be in more financial trouble than I'd bargained on. Now I've seen Wig and Robe's post I'm wondering if it was due to the clowns who lived here before us.

I'd say tread carefully, Melsy. It might be worthwhile photocopying they conveyancing document that you had when you bought your house and forwarding it to the credit card company so they can see that the debtor no longer lives there.

We had this at our old address-And yes it does link with your address making it hard to get credit and however much you call the comapanies involved they don't seem to change thier records! It wasn't until bailiff's became involved and we told them that we were not the people who held the debt that the letters stopped coming!
