Cash/debit card for 10 year old?

Can anyone point me in the right direction to look?

I know the big one is Go Henry but the fees seem ridiculous.

I think younare stuck with prepaid credit cards essentially u till they turn 13 - at which point a proper bank account with a proper debit card is the (free) answer...

Be interested to see what others come up with for my 9yr old...

Lymregent · 22/08/2022 21:37

Halifax offer one for age 11.

LittleBearPad · 22/08/2022 21:38

I think several banks offer one for 11 year olds.

Agreed on the GoHenry fees - absurd cost!

Wildlynx · 22/08/2022 21:38

Hyperjar though adult needs main account

BooksAndHooks · 22/08/2022 21:44

You may have to wait until 11 when you can get a junior bank account with a proper debit card.

dementedpixie · 22/08/2022 21:45

I'd wait until they are 11 and can get a free high street bank account with debit card

WendyAndDave · 22/08/2022 21:47

www.starlingbank.com/current-account/kite-debit-card-for-kids/ Starling do one but you have to have an account with them yourself

bettybyebye · 22/08/2022 21:52

My 9 and 7 year olds have hyperjar cards.
I had to download the app and register myself, although I only use it to send them
pocket money. Then I set up an account for each of them and they got their cards sent through the post. Can only use for card payments and not to withdraw cash but that’s fine for us. I manage everything through the app. If the child has a mobile they can get the app too to see their own account. It’s fee free so a lot better than go Henry in that sense!

Forgetaboutme · 22/08/2022 21:58

Revolut. My 9 year old has a card. It cost £5 as a one off fee for the card then it's free x

HenryCavillsPerfectTeeth · 22/08/2022 22:02

My son has Rooster by NatWest. They're available from 6 upwards. It's £1.99 a month unless you're with NatWest in which case the first year is free.

swashbucklecheer · 22/08/2022 22:04

I got a hyperjar one for my ds too. Only had it a month but seems great so far with none of the fees of gohenry.

milkysmum · 22/08/2022 22:04

Mine had rooster cards and then when they turned 11 a Natwest Adapt account.

mrsfeatherbottom · 22/08/2022 22:12

Who do you bank with?

I'm with Halifax and was able to get cards for my two and I can see their accounts on my online banking - really easy to transfer etc. No fees which is why I chose over Go Henry and the like.

Pinkpeony2 · 22/08/2022 22:17

Best thing is to wait until they are 11 and then loads of banks allow your child to open their own account with a debit card and online access via the app etc.

Invisimamma · 22/08/2022 22:27

We have the Halifax one, its very good, no fees and can access on our own online banking.

100thNameAttempt · 22/08/2022 22:32

Rooster cards

BlueyS3 · 23/08/2022 10:37

Brilliant thanks everyone who applied. I didn't realise that 11 was the magical age - he is actually just about to turn 10 so that's a full year away but might still just wait. I will check out the accounts mentioned though - I don't mind paying a £5/similar initial fee as mentioned by someone above but I don't want to be paying £2 per month or anything like that.

To whoever asked I bank with Lloyds and also have a Monzo account. Don't think either of them offer anything special.

Hyperjar definitely worth looking at, gives a debit card and no fees.
