And I'm having a panic!
Since returning to work after may leave last year I haven't been earning enough to pay NI!
My mum said as I'm not paying "my stamp" it'll have a negative effect on me!
What do I need to do? I just thought all of this came out automatically!
Sorry if I sound ridiculous 😬

You can check your payments and see any gaps on the Gov website (search check my NI payments). It’s worth looking into as it can cause problems later on with pension contributions etc
Are you getting Child Benefit?

IHateHeatWaves · 17/08/2022 19:48

Do you earn £120-180 a week? If so, your NI is covered.

AnneElliott · 17/08/2022 19:48

If you're getting child benefit in your name then that will give you NI credits until your youngest is 12 years old I believe.

Iamnotthe1 · 17/08/2022 19:50

You may be getting NI credits automatically. As the pp has said, check your NI record online.

NoodleSnow · 17/08/2022 19:50

If you have a child under 12, you get national Insurance contributions credited as long as you are registered for child benefit. This applies even if you elect not to actually receive the child benefit because your partner earns above the tax threshold.

SilverGiraffe7 · 17/08/2022 19:50

If you're claiming child benefit for a child under 12 then you'll be getting your NI contribution credited for you: www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/benefits/benefits-if-you-have-children/protecting-your-state-pension-when-you-have-a-baby

www.gov.uk/check-national-insurance-record

All the info is on www.gov.uk

dementedpixie · 17/08/2022 20:39

How much do you earn?

If you earn between £123 and £242 a week, your contributions are treated as having been paid to protect your National Insurance record

Wateringthegarden · 17/08/2022 21:01

No you must claim, and then tick the box not to take the money. I missed 5 years of contributions as I thought I shouldn't claim because DH earnt too much.

They have refused to credit me.

IHateHeatWaves · 17/08/2022 21:21

I did same as watering.

Was a SAHM until youngest was 12, then went to 24 hours work a week. I ticked box that said I didn’t want CB payments, but wanted NI credit/ state pension contribution.

Everyone is entitled to CB snd NI/ state pension contributions till youngest is 12. You just have to pay it back (or not take the £) if your household has a high earner.

LIZS · 17/08/2022 21:24

You only have to register for cb to get ni credit, but can output of payments if your dh/dp earns over the threshold.

watermelonlipbalm · 17/08/2022 22:10

So I claim UC as I am a single parent on low income with 2 children.
I checked the link and for the past couple years my ni co tribute on has been like £80 but not showing this year as not complete :(
I'm worried and not sure who to speak to 🤷🏼‍♀️

What nation are you not paying insurance on ?

FlowerArranger · 17/08/2022 22:36

BeePositive gave you the link, OP!

dementedpixie · 17/08/2022 22:43

www.gov.uk/national-insurance-credits/eligibility

This says you get class 3 credits if on UC

watermelonlipbalm · 17/08/2022 23:43

Haha national insurance 🙈

Ok so thanks all for the info!
I'm assuming that I don't need to do anything or make a voluntary contribution?
🤷🏼‍♀️

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 17/08/2022 23:48

Each 'year' runs to 05 April. Contributions made during the 'year' often don't show up until the autumn, so don't panic.
You can make voluntary payments up to about 5 years back.

Give them a call, they're very helpful.

FlowerArranger · 18/08/2022 05:30

Have you actually checked - via the link that BeePositive posted - that your contributions are up to date?

sashh · 18/08/2022 05:54

I've just checked mine OP and like you and probably everyone this year is 'not yet complete'.

If you are worried you can leave a question on your journal with UC and ask them and you can also contact HMRC.

In all probability you will be getting credits towards NI.

Once you have checked your NI you can go to the government site to check your pension forecast.

I have 37 qualifying years and 3 years that are partial, now there is no point me paying the three partial years because I cannot increase my pension.
