Purely hypothetically... if a cup of water were accidentally to fall into the tv...

would it be likely to be covered by the new for old on the insurance?

And do they tell you what new to buy, or can you just give em a reciept/they give you money?

Oh dear!

Yes, it should be covered, but whether you can go out and buy to a price or whether they insist on providing it depends on the company I think.

WendyWeber · 20/01/2008 20:07

(That's assuming you have accidental damage included in your contents cover - it's often an extra)

JingleyJen · 20/01/2008 20:07

I think it depends if you have accidental damage cover - if you do it should.

will read the paperwork - thanks!

A lot of insurers cover audio-visual equipment against accidental damage as standard.

HappyMummyOfOne · 20/01/2008 21:57

Be careful, they will assess if they think it was an accident and have all sorts of methods to do this. If they believe you did it on purpose or it was negligence (ie water and electrics) then they wont pay out and may cancel the policy. If you have a policy cancelled for a fraudulant claim then it is almost impossible to get a new insurer to take you on.

Re new for old, no they wont give you a lcd for an old style tv. It just means they wont source a 10 year old (for example) tv if thats what yours was. Ie if you wrote a fiesta off would you expect a porsche instead?

You'll get a replacement to the same standard and style where possible. It usually comes direct from a supplier of their choice as they get a discount.

Second what HappyMummy said. At least one insurer I know of (and there are probably many more) uses a voice recognition system that can help to detect stresses in your voice to see if you are telling the truth.

WendyWeber · 20/01/2008 22:07

But LCDs seem to be generally cheaper now than the traditional kind - and that's if you can even find one! eg if you had, say a 28" traditional widescreen Panasonic, they don't exist any more; a 26" Panasonic LCD is £430 from amazon, I imagine you'd probably get one like that.

(HMo1, I don't think most people would tip water into a TV on purpose, would they? I wouldn't dare, I'd be terrified it would explode!)

Lol - would never actually do it - was just dreaming wistfully about having my money back

I am the kind of person who worries about everything relating to money coming in (I tell tax credits etc about £1 income changes )
