Hey,
So im moving from a 2 bed flat that is managed by Trading places into my parents 2nd home they are renting out. my grandma died during covid and left the house to my dad so hes done it up and now renting it to myself. Ive got 2 kids (12yo and 10 months) so im going to be paying £700 a month to my parents.
Does anyone know what i will need to write on the letter from my dad to UC with my situation on?
TIA x

thanks for getting back to me. my dads got a buy to let mortgage on it as he had to spend over £100k on the house before it was able to be lived in and now its done im moving in as i need more space. will a letter with all the information on saying its owned by him and i will be paying rent and all the bills and i will have proof of payments each month, will that be enough?

Has it previously been let out on a commercial basis?

If not, that may make your case more difficult.

I know someone who does this, ie claiming housing benefit for a flat owned by their dp. They have to go to a lot of trouble to conceal it - the rent is paid to the mil who has a different name from her ds, the owner of the property who lives there with partner.

I must admit I wouldn’t like always looking over my shoulder waiting to be investigated.

An extended family member was caught doing this he rented to his son and partner tenancy was in the girlfriends name .took months but they were caught and had to pay back the housing benefit the landlord also.had to pay a fine.

basically my dad has rented a house out about 12 years ago for a couple of years so has some idea. But my flat im currently in with my 2 kids is done completely through an agency but is far to small for us 3. I'm paying 650 but I was told they were going to put it up to 875 soon. So when I told my dad he had already thought about mentioning me moving into his inherited house nearer to family for £800. Just me my 2 kids and a dog I recently rescued (my dad wasn't to happy about that as he put new kitchen in)
My dad wants to do everything legit anyway, tenancy agreement, gas safety, tax return proof everything.

Have you reported it? You should you know, so that the money goes to a legitimate claimant instead of to a fraudster.

Most BTL lenders won’t give a mortgage if the property will be rented to family. Your father may need to check with his lender that he’s allowed to rent to you…
