Hi all can someone please tell me if they think my gran will be accepted ?
shes 86 and loves him her own bought 3 bed house
she’s has never claimed anything other than her state and work pensions (which is not much at all I think she only gets around £700 a month)

my mum applied for her as she had 3 heart attacks last year, cannot walk far, on lots of meds and has lots done for her what she cannot do like clean, cut grass & take her shopping etc
so in this case would she be accepted? Also how long to hear anything back from were sent off yesterday
thanks

Attendance allowance is usually about help with personal care and mobility ability. Each of those areas had different levels too. There is no harm in requesting an application form and seeing how many of the areas she needs support with. She sounds a bit borderline but might get low rate.

It’s taking about 8 weeks at the moment. It looks at difficulties with personal care, washing, dressing moving around indoors etc. Or if someone needs continual supervision for their own safety. It’s not means tested

Household tasks and gardening won’t get taken into account x

Quitelikeit · 03/08/2022 21:07

You might also get carers allowance for her too

can she claim pip?

can she claim pension credit?

£700 seems very low

you shouldn’t contact your local authorities financial advice team

Seventygoingunder · 03/08/2022 21:08

She can’t claim PIP as over the age limit.

Beepbeepenergy · 03/08/2022 21:09

She would 100% not be able to live the life she loves and has now in her house if she didn’t have 2 daughters, 4 granddaughters and 4great grandkids all chipping in everyday

Regarding cares allowance, can that be claimed now while she only gets pensions or does she have to be claiming attendance allowance. First

She'll need to be claiming attendance allowance before anyone can claim carers.

You'll have to fill in the forms to see if she's eligible as it's all about the care she needs.

Thankyou

Too late now, but Age UK sent someone round to help my dad fill in his AA form. She was excellent and thought of lots of things we hadn’t considered.

Beepbeepenergy · 03/08/2022 21:28

Oh that was good, my mum did it and took her over a week to fill in and get right so fingers crossed

Attendance Allowance ( contrary to popular belief ! ) is not about whether you can do your shopping and gardening. This is not asked about at all on the form. AA is about whether you need help or have difficulties with personal care - washing and dressing yourself, feeding yourself, need help or have difficulties at night, can get to the toilet or have problems going to the toilet etc.
I think it's a very easy benefit to get compared to disability benefits for people under state pension age. I have completed around 35 AA forms in the past few months for work and have only had one refused. The key is also in getting medical evidence, sending a prescription list with the form or hospital letters, OT report etc, Summary of health conditions from GP surgery. Basically as long as you can evidence difficulties there wont be a problem claiming. Sometimes they may ring a person or a relative who is down on the form as a carer but otherwise they do no assessment.

Before anyone claims carers you need to consider that once AA is awarded, as your gran is on a low state pension , she may then be eligible for pension credit. If she lives alone and no-one claims carers allowance for caring for her then she would likely get a severe disability premium on pension credit. You need to be aware of this because if you claim carers allowance she would not get this sdp. You would need to work out which one of you gets the money ! Speak to AGE uk ofr a benefit check for her to see if she would be eligible.

There is no mobility component to Attendance Allowance. You are thinking of PIP. With AA obviously if mobility is poor then it's going to affect things like washing , getting out etc but there is no specific award for mobility as it is considered that most older people will have some degree of poor mobility as they age.

Does she need any assistance with personal care/toiletting etc?
i think it’s based more on these issues.
