Income tax question

Anyone have any idea why I would have had zero tax taken off my salary this month?

I've definitely earned enough, work have the correct tax code which is on my payslip but next to the tax deductions it say 0.00.

I've contacted payroll but they aren't the speediest.

This is the first month back in a salaried role with this company. I used to be salaried with them but went 'as and when required'.

Whilst working as and when with them I took on another salaried role with a 2nd company which I was paying 20% tax on. I've since left the 2nd role and returned to contracted hours with the original company.

Tax codes are cumulative so in your previous role your tax code would have been applied in such a way to split your personal allowance evenly across the year. As you then did not earn a consistent amount each month you likely had unused personal allowance accumulating which meant this month no tax was due as it was covered by unused personal allowances from a previous month.

Employers have to report in real time to HMRC these days so there is less chance of you getting to the end of the tax year having paid too much or too little tax.

Did you hand in your P45 from the 2nd company? If not your tax code at your current employer is assuming you have had no pay this tax year and giving your full year's allowances in one go (probably 4 month's worth) and therefore your allowances are higher than your pay meaning no tax.

Thanks both.

No didn't hand in a P45 but in April HMRC tried to split my tax code between both jobs. I contacted them asking to keep it all on the 1st job and basic rate on the 2nd as I knew I was returning to the original job. So sounds like it's an accumulation of unused personal allowance.

Phew was getting concerned.

If you’re still concerned I would use the HMRC app to update your estimated taxable income for the year and this should reset your tax code.

I had to do this last month as was taxed an eye watering amount, turns out a one off bonus had caused the system to update my annual income estimate to over triple what my actual pay will be ooouch! It was simple and quick to do.

Thanks for that.

They had underestimated my income. Not massively thankfully.

That plus accrued personal allowance prob accounts for the no tax.

Never in all my days has my tax been 0.00!

Think it will be a one off!

You should check also that you are not taxed on a month 1 basis.

I don't understand what you mean? What's a 1 month basis?
Payslip has my correct tax code, it was on my payslip
