We have owned/lived at our address for 4 years and have repeatedly got letters from debt collectors for people that don't live here. I have always opened them and called the agency to tell them that person doesn't live here and never has. I had two different letters for two different people using my address just today! I am sooo fed up! Anyway, I questioned one of the companies in detail today to find out why they have this address. I was told that Experian Credit company (who they use to trace people) has that person registered at this address. So I called Experian and spoke to someone who told me I must NEVER open letters addressed to other people as that would be taken as a presumption that I know the person or am connected to them. She advised me that in future I should just mark them as "not known at this address" and return them.

I am so confused now. These letters are often threatening legal action and bailifs. I can't belive that just ignoring them won't get me in trouble. BUt this lady was adamant that no action would be taken if I just sent the letters back.

Does anyone know what I should do?

sorry, I don't, but a friend of mine had this problem with previous tenants in the house she rents out having these letters sent, years after they have moved out.

Hope someone else comes along who can help

Ok, thanks. I will start to do that. I just wonder though - if I really was the person, and just wanted to avoid the debt, couldn't I do the same thing?
