child tax changing to UC

Has anyone had their child tax credit recently changed to UC before they force us to change.

So im a SAHM but husband works full time we currently get child tax and child benefit and deciding to swap to UC now rather than later. Has anyone done this are you much worse off? Or better off?

Some people will be better off ,some worse. It's dependent on individual circumstances. Generally people who have rent to pay but are not able to make a new claim for housing benefit whilst on tax credits will be better off.

That should be us, we pay full everything get minimal child tax credit and i just cant be bothered to do the HMRC renewal because my husband job changed and its so confusing to my dyslexic brain figuring out what he got paid before a certain date and after and the tax he paid ect. So i was just going to go to UC now instead of next year.

I'm waiting it out, I've had to give up a job I love and am good at as under UC I won't be eligible for anything and I can't live on what I currently earn alone. Hoping they don't switch me over before I start my new role in January.

I hope switching early works well for you.

You still need to do your renewal or they will ask for all the money back from April!

Depending on age of child you will have work commitments too so can’t just be a sahm

I’m at SAHM and hubby works full time and we get UC
I remember been on tax credits a few years back and I was struggling to live
I’d wait for the £650 payment tho so you don’t loose out on that then switch x

Moonchair1 · 12/07/2022 22:33

why Carnt she be a SAHM ? My friend is 40 years old has 2 kids age 18 and 16 (so definitely no need to be out of work, but her choice) and hubby works full time
she doesn’t have work commitments as long as hubby is full time she does nothing

What is the £650 payment I've only received £150 for elec/gas.

You are correct. Even on Uc if her husband is earning more than a certain amount ( i can't remember the exact amount but it is very little), then op will be put in the light touch group and have very little in the way of being expected to work. Wheras single parents are treated much more harshly. It is unfair.

If your husband was self employed it would be more hassle to be on universal credit versus tax credits to be honest.
