How can I get credit?

I've been turned down for credit on a soft search twice in the last month.

How do I get credit ?

Details that might be relevant. It's been 20 odd years since I had any credit. I think, maybe 25 yrs ago I have a cvg - some sort of black mark? - was so long ago I don't remember what it was called (spelling). I don't need credit but I'd like to have it to build ratings.

Thank you

The money saving expert website is full of great advice.

There are specific credit cards (low limit) for people looking to build up a credit rating (I think aqua and some others).

A mobile phone contract would also allow you to build a credit history.

Start small. Don’t borrow more than you can afford to repay. Make repayments on time every month.

@PoisonedIvydaffs thank you for your response, it's appreciated. Thing is, I have money. I just can't seem to get credit. Its frustrating.

When you check your credit rating - does it show historic issues?

Have you made a real application or just an indicative service?

While the Money Saving Expert advice is generally fantastic, I've never found the 'will I get credit' service that accurate.

First check that you are on the electoral roll and have a good look at the information about you in the MSE credit club or whichever other service you used for the soft search for accuracy, eg no surprise defaults due to an unpaid mobile phone bill or similar.

Although information generally drops off after 6 years so the problem you mention decades ago shouldn't still be hanging around.

You could try your own bank for a credit card as they will see your income coming in each month and how you pay your bills.

Then use the card for some of your normal spending each such as groceries or fuel and set up a direct debit to pay the balance off in full every month.

Even if the initial credit limit is low or the card doesn't offer benefits like cashback, you should be able to apply for a better card after a few months.

Have you checked your credit report? You can get a free copy from Experian or Credit Karma and see what your score is.

Hi yes, my credit rating on one of the site seems very good. I tried to buy a phone with Apple and it said I couldn't have the three monthly payment plan. I've always paid my phone bill.

Good idea to try my own bank

I started a loqbox account to start rebuilding my credit score; not that useful if you need credit immediately though.

You need to do what I do… my credit is outstanding and I’m getting thousands thrown at my by argos, klarna, very etc

just get an argos card and put stuff on it but pay it off at the end of the month and watch your credit score fly up
I do this also with klarna then pay it straight off at the end of the month

Apply for a wave credit card, my credit is shocking but i got accepted last week ans will use it to build my credit back up. You can check if eligible before fully applying
