How much maternity pay did you receive?

Obviously this could be a broad subject! But I am currently 11.5 weeks pg with DC2 and trying to get an idea of finances when baby is born in January - I was in uni when I had DC1 so never received maternity pay before.

I understand maternity pay is a weekly amount, but I am not sure how that translates to a monthly wage or what to expect. If it’s not too personal I would be really interested to hear what you actually came out with on maternity leave?

I get £631 SMP a month.

It all depends if your current workplace has a maternity package (mine doesn’t so I only get SMP which is shit)

Mushroo · 04/07/2022 15:38

I get 6 months full pay, 3 months SMP and 3 months nothing, it’s very generous and I actively considered the mat leave policy when applying.

Hi @pedropony76 I should have mentioned that - my employer is also rubbish and just offers the basic maternity package, which I think is 90% for 6 weeks then SMP. I had guessed around £600, so thank you 😊

Most employers offer smp only. Those that offer more usually put conditions on returning to work after ml. The 90% is based on actual earnings during specific weeks. I was lucky to get a bonus paid during that time which inflated the 90%. SMP is currently just over £155 a week.

pedropony76 · 04/07/2022 15:49

Ah I see well your calculations were close enough!

Yeah it’s £631 once it’s just SMP :)

I work for the NHS. I get 8 weeks full pay, 18 weeks half pay plus SMP, then 13 weeks just SMP. If I take the year the final 3 months are zero pay.

I was a teacher (and in England) - I can’t remember what I got in OMP but I think something like 4 weeks at full pay, 2 weeks at 90% and 12 weeks at half pay. Then I went on to SMP but as I had two jobs I had two lots of SMP which was slightly over 300 per month!

I am on mat leave. i think annual leave accrues during Mat leave - so with my employer I get double the leave next year.

For DC1 I got SMP, DC2 I got six months full pay then SMP. It should be in your contract what you will recursive. Bear in mind SMP is subject to tax

user19888891 · 08/07/2022 20:26

Receive not recursive

I worked for a small male dominated company when I got pregnant. My contract said 8 weeks full pay then SMP.
I said to the board that their SMP offering was low compared to the industry standard and asked would they consider reviewing it.
They asked me to bring them details of what other organisations were paying and they would consider it.
Eventually they reviewed the information I gave them and changed the policy to 8 weeks plus another week for each year over 5 years the woman had been employed by them.
I had been there 9 years so I got an additional 4 weeks at full pay -12 weeks in total.
They were good employers and this policy change benefited several who came after me so I was pleased.
I also got a tax rebate one month when I was on SMP which bumped it up so don't forget about that OP.
I only took 5 months as I was the higher earner but without that negotiated uplift I was planning on taking 4, which would have been rough.

I took around 9 months. I got full wages for 6 months, that's standard for all public workers here in Ireland. Then I had 9 weeks annual leave paid and I took 5 weeks parents leave at just €250 a week. Had the option to take 4 months unpaid but didn't want to do that.
