Professional subscriptions-allowance of deduction

stressedouttumbleweed · 20/06/2022 14:40

I work in a job where I have to be a member of a professional body plus there are also associations that I am a member of.
I pay these myself, but my employer reimburses me via expenses.
Do I need to a declare this as an expense to increase my tax free allowance or as a deduction, or just ignore it completely.
Thanks in advance :)

If you are being fully reimbursed then you can't claim an extra 20% on top through tax deductions.

Thank you-but do I have to claim it as a benefit in kind? Or just leave it off tax return completely?

Its not a tax return-just to get the coding notice right!

No, it’s not a taxable benefit in kind.

In your position (as an employee) it doesn’t need declaring anywhere for tax purposes.

Hi, as Tippexy mentioned you can't claim relief yourself as your employer is paying. You will not be taxed on it as a benefit in kind if each organisation is on the HMRC list of approved organisations here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/professional-bodies-approved-for-tax-relief-list-3

The rule is set out here: www.gov.uk/expenses-benefits-subscriptions-professional-fees/whats-exempt (the guidance is written for employers as it is the employer who would need to report it as a taxable benefit if not on the list).
